GNOME, Its State and Future Linux Journal
GNOME is part of the GNU project, and it is free software (some people call this open-source software), created for the people by the people.
Since our goal in the GNOME project is empowering users and giving them a chance to run free software, we have to make sure everyone on this planet can use our tools with their language, and that our applications can be used by all people.
The desktop environment is not the set of applications, such as a web browser or a spreadsheet, with which a user interacts with the system to do useful tasks; rather, it is the utilities which provide the user with control over the working environment.

GNOME: The Free Software Desktop Project
GNOME is Free Software and part of the GNU project, dedicated to giving users and developers the ultimate level of control over their desktops, their software, and their data.

GNOME understands that usability is about creating software that is easy for everyone to use, not about piling on features.

An idea for the Gnome 3 desktop (I know that is completely devoid of originality, but I feel like by making a start, and giving users/designers a way of giving input, a more original look can be developed over time).
GNOME does NOT work on thinclients very well now (if you login on two machines, only one gets gconf working, apps opening on the other display if already running etc. --- this is not GNOME proper, I know...) and it should be designed without neglecting networked environments like it seems now.
GNOME needs to be more 'usable' for the average developer to boost contributions and independent/new applications.
