Sprucing up open source's GPL foundation CNET News.com
GPL author Richard Stallman said he's working on amendments that could deal better with software patents; clarify how GPL software may be used in some networked environments and on carefully controlled hardware; and lower some barriers that today prevent the mixing of software covered by the GPL and other licenses.
In the 13 years since the current GPL version 2 was released, the license has moved from the fringes to the center of the computing industry.
The GPL governs the programming instructions called source code that developers write and then convert into the binary files that computers understand.

GNU General Public License - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Note that the copyleft only applies to the software and not to its output (unless that output is itself a derivative work of the program); for example, a web portal running a modified GPL content management system is not required to distribute its changes to the underlying software.
An unintended side-effect of the GPL delineating between "internal" derivative code and "external" linked libraries has been a pronounced tendency for software developed under this license to grow increasingly monolithic.
As of April 2004, the GPL accounted for nearly 75% of the 23,479 free-software projects listed on Freshmeat, and about 68% of the projects listed on SourceForge.

 BSD license vs. GPL
In essence if you the author of some useful addition to the GPL program that was widely adopted and developed further you are denied any subsequent modification, enhancement of your ideas in...case you [are a] commercial developer.
This means that the GPL prevents even the original authors from changing GPL code to proprietary code.
Therefore, by release code as GPL, the original developers are also depriving themselves of the option to benefit from the open source development process and then eventually turning the code into a proprietary product.

NewsForge Why I love the GPL
GPL does inhibit good people making a few dollars off their code (commercial software dev not custom software dev).
The GPL is in a way viral in that what you develop on top of that code must also be GPL.
One of the big points of confusion of GPL pundits is that software should be free because it is fundamentally a non-rivalous resource.

Make Your Open Source Software GPL-Compatible. Or Else.
Many OSS/FS developers prefer the GPL, because they believe the GPL (1) provides a better quid-pro-quo for developers, (2) establishes collaboration between people and companies better than consortia, (3) protects their work in today’s less-than-kind environment, and/or (4) encourages increasing the amount of Free Software.
One way, of course, is to use the GPL.
This essay is a call to all those developers who are developing open source software / Free Software (OSS/FS, also called FLOSS or FOSS).

Opinion: License to FUD (comparing GPL and BSD)
But for most other uses, either GPL or full proprietary is preferred in the not-so-kind computing environment of today.
These people explained that developers consider the GPL to be in their interest, even though the GPL forces them (and subsequent developers) to publish any updates or modifications.
Many appear to use the GPL simply as a way to balance the playing field for certain core elements of computer software.

 morons.org - GPL Considered Harmful
Yes, the explicit purpose of the GPL is to hurt programmers' livelihoods.
In addition, it is required that this code be obtained from internal company FTP server, rather than the Internet at large, so that it has been verified as not incorporating any company patents at the time it a snapshot is taken for the project for which you wish to use it.
Using a software license with a political agenda of this magnitude is unconscionable.

The OpenSSL License and The GPL
However, as a special exception, the source code distributed need not include anything that is normally distributed (in either source or binary form) with the major components (compiler, kernel, and so on) of the operating system on which the executable runs, unless that component itself accompanies the executable.
There is some disagreement about what this exception means when the both the GPL program and the GPL incompatible library are shipped as part of the operating system.
The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it.

 FSF - Licenses
As a special exception, you have permission to link this program with the FOO library and distribute executables, as long as you follow the requirements of the GNU GPL in regard to all of the software in the executable aside from FOO.
It is not in use yet to our knowledge; this license is being considered for use in Perl 6 as part of a disjunctive dual licensing scheme.
Since the QPL is incompatible with the GNU GPL, you cannot take a GPL-covered program and QPL-covered program and link them together, no matter how.

However, the program will not check if your input was logically correct.
Setting the value to 1 makes GPL use camera values #9 to #12 for zoom and picture location.
For example, if your track has an overall length of 4 km an you enter 5000 as number for value #1 (see chapter 4 for an explanation of all values), then TrkCAMEdit would accept the input, but GPL hardly would.

LWN: The FSF GPL Compliance Lab
Companies that release code under the GPL do so in the hope that their competitors will not take unfair advantage of that code and distribute proprietary enhancements.
The OSI is the noisy newcomer, and the FSFGPLCL (tee hee hee)
But the PR is also interesting in that it is the first public mention we could find of the "GPL Compliance Lab." So we contacted the FSF to learn a little more about it.

 What are the licensing terms?
This means that unless you modify the tools so that compiled executables do not make use of the Cygwin library, your compiled programs will also have to be free software distributed under the GPL with source code available to all.
The Cygwin API library found in the winsup subdirectory of the source code is also covered by the GNU GPL (with exceptions; see below).

 Mozilla Relicensing FAQ
Since the people in question presumably chose to use the LGPL (and not the GPL) for some reason important to them, it would be preferable to arrange the Mozilla licensing scheme so that they could include Mozilla code and still use the LGPL for the resulting works.
Thus, for example, it has always been true, and will continue to be true, that Mozilla code distributed through mozilla.org can be combined with other code to create larger works which can be distributed under proprietary license terms.
The original intent behind the changes to the Mozilla licensing scheme was to allow Mozilla code to be combined with other code to create larger works which could be distributed under GPL terms.

 Licenses
The GNU General Public License is often called the GNU GPL for short; it is used by most GNU programs, and by more than half of all Free Software packages.
Documentation for free software should be free documentation, so that people can redistribute it and improve it along with the software it describes.
You don't have to modify the GNU GPL to do this, just add notices to your program which refer properly to the GNU GPL.
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/licenses.html

 affero.org: affero general public license
You will find it nearly identical to the GNU GPL, with an addition of section 2 (d), which covers use of the software over a computer network.
If you wish to incorporate parts of the Program into other free programs whose distribution conditions are different, write to the author to ask for permission.
Each version is given a distinguishing version number.

 GPL Track Database
To install all current patches for GPL from Papyrus you need to download and install five separate patches and also carefully read six different "read me" instruction files to be able to add the text neccesary into the core.ini file for example.
If you have manually edited your core.ini file these edits will be lost since this installer replaces it with the one included here.
For old GPL'ers this poses no problem but if you just got the game this is a daunting task.

NodeWorks - Encyclopedia: BSD & GPL licensing
However, the BSD license allows commercial organizations to build upon the inventions of free software and research environments that use free software licenses to further develop their programs.
There has been continuing discussion over the relative merits of the use of either license in free software projects.
Proponents of copyleft-style software licenses such as the GPL argue that the non-copyleft nature of the BSD license becomes detrimental to open source in general, as it does not expressly require that users who extend BSD-licensed software must openly release their modifications.

 Rewriting GPL No Easy Task
Moglen defended the need for a longer license, saying that computer programming has changed since 1991 and that there will be changes to the language around the paradigm of programming changes, resulting in "much arm waving and breast thumping about these changes."
But those changes in programming paradigms are neither better nor worse than the paradigms they replaced or of those that will replace them going forward," Moglen said.
The latest version of the current GPL license, known as GPL Version 2.2 and dated August 2004, is not that different from the present license.

Wired News: Letter: Free Software Hurts U.S.
Some divisions of the U.S. government already run Linux and open-source software, and federal research dollars are beginning to trickle into GPL projects like the National Security Agency-funded Security-Enhanced Linux project.
In a section of recommendations for home and small-business users, it advises that Windows, Macintosh and Linux users regularly update their operating systems.
Open-source advocates say this controversy is just one of the opening salvos in what they expect will become a major struggle to define the role of open-source and GPL software in the federal government.

Sun considers GPL license for Solaris InfoWorld News 2004-04-30 By Robert McMillan, IDG News Service
"Maybe we'll GPL it," Schwartz said of Solaris, referring to the GNU General Public License under which the Linux operating system is distributed.

Until now, Sun has made Solaris freely available to certain non-commercial users, but it has not released the Solaris source code, and still charges $99 for a single-processor license.
