 Driverheaven.net: Interview with Gabe Newell
Gabe Newell: The coolest technology that we cut was the image-based rendering techniques that Gary McTaggart was working on.
What are some of the ideas that were cut that you wish you could have implemented, and if any of them were cut because of a lack of hardware support, what do you think will happen with these concepts in future games and future technology?
Tree-branching in things like technology trees seems to work well; tree-branching in things like levels or plot seem to work poorly.

Gabe: I think what we have to do is continue to look for ways to make Steam more valuable to people, to solve problems for people.
