One was because NVIDIA decided to produce an optimized version of the GeForce 3 (NV 20) which resulted in the GeForce 4 Ti (NV 25), while ATI cancelled its competing optimized chip (R250) and opted instead to focus on the Radeon 9700.
The advertising campaign for the GeForce FX featured the Dawn fairy demo, which was the work of several veterans from the computer animation Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

From the specs above, the GeForce FX appears to have the edge in fillrate, however, this is a more complex issue than one might initially assume.
The performance characteristics exhibited by the GeForce FX in fillrate benchmarks and other tests sparked quite a bit of discussion across the internet regarding the validity of NVIDIA's claims and the true nature of the NV30's architecture.
Since this is exactly what we are benchmarking in the above fillrate test, the GeForce FX writes four color pixels to the framebuffer per clock.

NVIDIA's GeForce FX 5700 Ultra GPU - The Tech Report - Page 1
The GeForce FX 5700 line is based on NVIDIA's new NV36 graphics chip, which is essentially a mid-range version of the high-end NV35 chip found in NVIDIA's GeForce FX 5900 and 5900 Ultra.
Overall, NV36 doesn't represent a radical departure from the GeForce FX architecture; the chip should share all the perks that go along with "cinematic computing," but it will also inherit a number of quirky personality traits that have thus far had a negative impact on performance.
NVIDIA continues to reiterate the fact that its entire GeForce FX line is sensitive to instruction ordering and pixel shader precision.

The GeForce FX however, takes things much further, offering a maximum of 1,024 texture and color instructions per shader, versus 32 and 64 instructions on the R300.
In fact, the GeForce FX can execute 64X the number of vertex shader instructions than ATI's R300, has 4 more temporary registers and maximum of 256 loops versus the R300's 4 loops.
The GeForce FX can also handle much more complex vertex shaders than the R300, and surpass the DX9 specification.

The compared memory rates between GeForce4 and GeForce FX are consistent with GeForce FX utilising a 128bit memory bus as opposed to a 256 bit bus utilised on recent boards such as the ATI Radeon 9700 (PRO), Matrox Parhelia, and 3Dlabs Wildcat VP.
AGP 8X Host to Graphics interface — GeForce FX utilises the latest AGP 3.0 specification to get the highest possible transfer rates between the host system and graphics controller, allowing for greater geometry and texture transfer rates.
8 Pixels Per Clock — providing, on a clock for clock basis, twice the pixel performance of GeForce 4 Ti, current games can be rendered faster (CPU willing) and allows more flexibility in future applications for increased per pixel operations whilst still maintaining playable frame rates.
