Georgia (font) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Georgia is part of the Web core fonts package, therefore most computers with operating systems like Windows or Linux should have this font already installed.
Georgia is a font designed in 1993 by Matthew Carter.
It was made for Apple Computer and bundled with System 7.1 in 1993.

Usability News - 4.1 2002 -- A Comparison of Popular Online Fonts: Which Size and Type is Best?
Currently, text that is viewed on computer screens consist of an amalgamation of both serif and sans serif fonts that were designed specifically for computer use, as well as those that were originally intended for print (serif fonts cross-strokes that project from the main stroke of a letter, whereas sans serif fonts do not).
It is possible that Georgia and Times were considered attractive because of their widespread use in both print and on computer screens (Times also serves as the primary default for Microsoft Office™ software suites) and, thus, participants were more familiar with this type of font.
Verdana was the most preferred and Times was the least preferred font at this size, which is not that surprising since Verdana was designed specifically for the computer screen whereas Times was not.

HTML E-Mail: Text Font Readability Study
While Georgia seemed to be substantially more readable than Times New Roman, the number of users that did not have Georgia font installed on their computer seemed to be significant at 15%.
Another font that Microsoft developed to increase screen readability is Verdana, and it seems to be much more widespread among computer users, even Mac users, than Georgia.
However, my results showed that Georgia is not available on as many computers as Times New Roman or Arial, since the "could not distinguish" response was significant.

Serif fonts are easier to read on paper, certainly not on a computer monitor.
Lebreux's assertion that serif fonts are "certainly not [easier to read] on a computer monitor," the jury is still out on this one.
But as a regular computer user (indeed a software developer) and one that always thought that Verdana was *the* font, I've had my eyes opened.

Usability News - 2.2 - 2000 -- So, What Size and Type of Font Should I Use on My Website?
However both Georgia and Verdana were designed for the computer screen, whereas TNR and Arial were not.
One reason for this could be that at smaller font sizes on computer screens, the serifs stop acting as distinguishers and start becoming visual 'noise.' Moreover, small anti-aliased fonts may create even more visual noise because of the smoothing effects of the anti-aliased font.
In the past, it has been determined that serif fonts, which have ornamental strokes at the tip and base of each letter, are easier to read on paper than sans serif fonts, which do not have serifs.

 Times vs. Georgia
Georgia is a modern serif font that was designed specifically for onscreen legibility, as was Verdana (often misread as Veranda).
Georgia was jokingly named after a tabloid headline "Alien heads found in Georgia." If you must have one serif face for reading on a computer, then you've found the best one right here.
On the Fonts tab, choose Georgia for Proportional font, and Andale Mono for Fixed font.

Web Page Design for Designers – Editorial July 2004
When you specify a font family like this, the browser will use the first font that it comes to in the list that is actually installed on the user's computer.
Pixel fonts do not use anti-aliasing so they remain sharp and crisp at tiny sizes but they are not scaleable and can only be used at their optimal 'designed' size.
These 'pixel' fonts won't be installed on the user's machine so you have to make them into small GIF or PNG images, but if they are used sparingly and the images saved at low bit depths, their bytesize will be very small.

The case which arises in digital media, where a font’s possession is required merely to read a document, is recognized by different levels of embedding privilege that may be engineered into a font (TrueType or OpenType), and also stipulated in a EULA.
Other fonts, Nina for example (best font of the new millennium according to ID magazine) have not been available to users, and that was a shame — we got lots of requests for that font.
Consider that a popular font “sells” in the hundreds, if that, and the standard software and operating systems are numbered by the million.

 Fonts and the Web
Stick to the common system fonts for the text on web pages since on web pages, the font is not embedded in the document but is called from the user's machine via HTML.
The main issue with text and the web is that the typefaces installed on your computer may differ from those on someone else's machine; if you design a site using an obscure font face you may be the only person who will see it as intended.
Yet another intricacy of fonts on the web is how font size is rendered.

 Tenser, said the Tensor: Underdots
Does anyone know what the most widely installed IPA font is on the Mac, btw?) Note, however, that the available glyphs in the various fonts aren't exactly the same, so I have to be careful—some of the combining diacritics are in Gentium, but not in the others, for example.
Mozilla appears to be bit more aggressive—even if you have a font applied, Mozilla checks, for each character displayed, to see if the current font has a glyph for that character, and if it doesn't, it finds a font that does.
This feature of Mozilla means that you often don't need to apply a font to a character in an odd range, as long as your audience is guaranteed to be using Mozilla.

Burningbird » Give in to the Serifs
On a computer screen, x-height plays an important role and Matthew Carter designed both Georgia and Verdana with large x-heights (meaning that the height of a lower case “x” is relative to that an upper case “X” is much greater than for a font such as Times).
I think that it might be a problem with the font renderer in Mandrake, because no serif font looks good at small point sizes, with the exception of the default font called simply “serif”.
In general, the rule of thumb in print is serif for the text and sans-serif for the headers, while on screen, it is the opposite.

The font is simply too large compared with other fonts on the Windows system (I have read somewhere that Verdana is smaller on a Macintosh), which is why it has to be toned down to about 80% to look right in proportion to other fonts.
Of course, when a browser does fall back to 'sans-serif' if Verdana is not present on a system, the user will need to increase his font-size to about 120% to make the page look comparable to the Verdana design.
BTW: the Georgia font used in mozillaZine suffers from the same problems.
