 Multimedia Research Group : Microcosm
Of course, it wasn’t called multimedia in those days, the only technology that was actually available for integrating text, graphics, video and sound in a computer environment, which is the common definition of multimedia computing today, was interactive videodisc.
As described in the next chapter, the ideas on which the modern concept of hypertext is based emerged in the 1960’s, but in the mid-1980’s there were still very few hypertext systems available for use on personal computers.
Creating a hypermedia structure becomes a separate activity from creating a multimedia dataset since the hypermedia links essentially form a meta-layer of data that can be applied to any appropriate set of multimedia information.

EETimes.com - Group preps protocols for 1394-based 'hybrid' storage
SBP-2, a transport protocol defined in 1999 for IEEE 1394, is essential to printers, scanners, DVD players and other devices, since it defines standard ways of encapsulating device commands, such as SCSI commands, over 1394.
When the SBP-3 protocol standard is completed, a consumer could, for example, transfer a home movie directly from a digital video camcorder to an external 1394-based hard drive without going through a computer.
SAN MATEO, Calif. — A National Committee on Information Technology Standards (NCITS) working group is pursuing a new protocol standard for the IEEE 1394 bus in a bid to enable 1394-based "hybrid" storage devices that could efficiently handle both computer data and audio/video streams.
