Google Talk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike with Gmail, Google is not disclosing what features they are working on in general, although a FAQ states that they are working on adding rich text formatting features.
Before server-to-server communications was enabled in January 2006, many people criticized the inability of Google Talk to communicate with the larger Jabber network.
This objection is no longer valid, since Google Talk now offers the possibility of storing over 2GB of chat logs on the user's Gmail account.

BBC NEWS Technology Google sets tongues wagging with Talk
Google wants to turn its collection of services and add-on programs such as the Desktop Search sidebar into a helper that users can turn to no matter what they want to do.
By contrast, Google Talk is based on an open technology called Jabber which was created to help different networks talk to each other.
However, Google Talk does not yet use these features of Jabber and, for the moment, is as closed as any other network.

Google Talk goes beyond text-based instant messaging using a computer keyboard to let users hold voice conversations with other computer users.
Earlier, Google introduced a new service called the Google Sidebar, a stand-alone software program that sits on a user’s desktop and provides “live” information updates.

New Google Talk Offers Instant Messaging & Voice Chat
In other words, you aren't going to be using Google Talk to place calls from one telephone to another or from a computer to a telephone, although that apparently may come in the future.
The move also opens Google up to accusations that it is way off its mission of "to organize the world's information." Heck, Google Talk doesn't even feature a box to let you search for things, as rival products from AOL, MSN and Yahoo do.
As widely expected, Google waded into the instant messaging space today with the debut of Google Talk, an IM client that also offers the ability to make voice calls between computers.

The Google Talk Help Center is cheerfully open about all the things that the software doesn't do yet--including run on anything other than Windows.
I prefer MSN to Google Talk right now because it does have file transfer, but hate it because it is not clean, has whiteboard, remote assistance, and all these other things that are just wasting my space, resources, and are making my machine more susceptible to attack.
Still, Google Talk is such an easy download that you should try it if you have the slightest curiosity about it.

REVIEW: Google Talk - The Unofficial Google Weblog
Google's new instant messenger, Google Talk, is clean, exceptionally lightweight, free of feature glut, and simple to use.
The lack of group chatting will turn people away, and the fact that (according to SEW) Google Desktop does not index Google Talk chats—and there is no immediate plan to add that feature to Desktop—is inexplicable and offputting.
If you do have Gmail, you'll see Google Talk display a summary of unread messages in your Inbox when you first open the chat program, and it will continue notifying you as emails come in.

In the future, Google says it intends to add a raft of new features, including support for other operating systems (presumably Mac and Linux), encryption, compatibility with other internet telephony standards, and versions with a user interface in languages other than English (text chat already works in any language supported by Windows).
So smoothly does Google Talk work that it's easy to forget this is beta software.
If you're familiar with feature-laden competitors like MSN Messenger or AIM, it would almost be easier to describe Google Talk in terms of what it doesn't have: no cheery emoticons, no fancy fonts and no file transfers, for example.

Google entering chat may mean users will end up fragmented across yet another network, necessitating people run another program to find all their friends.
The only two solutions to talking to all friends on all networks are (1) download every client and run the programs simultaneously or (2) use a program like Trillian that circumvents running clients by signing into multiple networks (which also may break terms of service).
Between adding one more chat service in an internet that has plenty and not obviously having anything to do with their mission statement, some reviewers and users have been very hard on the new chat network.
