Topic: Guide (hypertext)

The Guide hypertext system for UNIX
Guide won the British Computer Society award for innovation.
Guide's main innovations were (a) buttons that expanded in-line; (b) integrating of reading documents with creating them -- the author uses the same software as the reader.
The original version of Guide, which I developed at the University of Kent, is a UNIX version, and is different in detail from the OWL products; in particular, as well as being used for production projects, it was used to explore certain research ideas in hypertext.

 Encyclopedia4U - Guide (hypertext) - Encyclopedia Article
Guide was a hypertext system originally developed by Peter Brown at the University of Kent in 1982.
The original Guide implementation was for Three Rivers PERQ workstations running Unix.
The Guide system was also the first hypertext system to be sold commercially, starting with the formation of Office Workstations Ltd.

 Hypertext Style: One-part version
Dividing the contents of your site into logical groups depends on who the expected audience is. For novices, providing a firm structure, perhaps also a "Guided tour", greatly helps to navigate the information.
An important aspect of information is the ability to trace its author.
That's why it is important to make documents accessible to everyone.

 Lynx Users Guide v2.3
A custom hypertext format was developed to support hypertext links to local files and files on remote Gopher servers.
The process of moving within a hypertext web, selecting and displaying links is known as "navigation." With Lynx almost all navigation can be accomplished with the arrow keys and the numeric keypad.
Following the lead of Neal Erdwien, of Kansas State University, the Lynx hypertext format was extended to include links for including ownership information with each file.

An impressive collection of original essays on topics in humanities computing.
"This Guide does not have any pretence to be a comprehensive introduction to this complex area of digital resource creation, but the authors have attempted to highlight some of the fundamental issues which will need to be addressed."

 "Administrator's Guide": HyperText Transfer Protocol
The HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a protocol (a set of rules that describe how information is exchanged on a network) that allows a web browser and a web server to "talk" to each other using the ISO Latin1 alphabet, which is ASCII with extensions for European languages.
For more information on HTTP, see the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) home page at
For more information on the criteria for being conditionally compliant, see the Hypertext Transfer Protocol—HTTP/1.1 specification (RFC 2068) at:

 What is good hypertext writing?
You're about to read an attempt to describe these reasons and goals; it is incomplete, subjective, and honest.
There is more to writing than putting words next to each other, and there is more to writing hypertext than throwing together a bunch of links.
When writing text, I have certain goals; when I come across text I dislike, there are certain reasons why I do not like it.
