 Heavy Lift Replacement [HLR]
Of the 7 technologies eliminated, 2 are being developed by the HLR program and 5 are being developed by or used on other programs and will then have to be integrated onto the HLR platform.
The critical technologies for the HLR program were not expected to be fully mature before the start of development in February 2005.
The HLR will vastly improve the ability of the MAGTF and Joint Task Force to project and sustain forces ashore from a sea-based center of operations in support of EMW.

 HUMAN LUNAR RETURN [1995-96]
HLR thus tried to apply the same philosophy as the X-38 Assured Crew Return Vehicle Experimental (ACRV-X) project and Discovery class of "cheaperfasterbetter" unmanned planetary probes.
The new HLR "vision" called for opening a "pipeline" of small-scale "skunk works" experimental unmanned projects and manned missions, which quickly and independently demonstrate enough progress to justify additional investment.
ACRV-X was regarded as an important pathfinder since it was developed in-house at NASA's Johnson Space Center by a small team, and much of the software was going to be reused for Human Lunar Return as well.

 Tech Soft America - developer.hoops3d.com
One of the primary downsides of using HLR algorithms is that they are inherently expensive as they need to sort and clip all the edges against all the facets in the scene (an n*log(n) algorithm at best).
HOOPS/3dGS is one of the few graphics systems to include a true HLR algorithm and it is turned on with a simple call to HOOPS/3dGS.
Because of the expensive nature of HLR many developers reserve HLR usage for hardcopy export and use tricks to fake HLR rendering for desktop display.

 Encyclopedia: Authentication Center
The EIR data does not have to change in real time, which means that this function can be less distributed than the function of the HLR.
In practice, for performance reasons, most vendors integrate the VLR directly to the V_MSC and, where this is not done, the VLR is very tightly linked with the MSC via a proprietary interface.
The data stored in the VLR has either been received from the HLR, or collected from the MS.

The HLR then queries each identified service-providing entity for call-treatment instructions which are then sent from the service-providing entities to the HLR.
In this embodiment, the HLR 12 queries the SCPs 13 and 14 in advance and stores the responses to various WIN capabilities that may be reported by different MSCs.
The Query includes the WINCAP parameter as received by the HLR from the MSC.

 Relocating HLRs
Regardless of the reason, it strategically positions the network toward a shared distributed computing architecture, which is critical as carriers move forward.
A separate HLR improves call-processing capacity because the MSC no longer has the burden of responding to subscriber-related queries.
The major advantage of this approach is that the switch vendor's proprietary services and features are still available.

 Introduction to GSM
The fact that the HLR can be populated with ranges or blocks of IMSI numbers creates efficiencies in the storage and retrieval of routing information.
The HLR then queries the VLR for a Mobile Station Roaming Number (MSRN).
The MSC must then query the HLR based on the MSISDN, to attain routing information required to route the call to the subscribers' current location.

“The distributed architecture and resilience of the Apertio HLR offers GSM operators an advanced, open solution to the problems of managing and growing the HLR function at the heart of their network,” said Paul Magelli, CEO at Apertio.
In addition the two-tier distributed architecture enhances performance and scalability with new signaling capacity added without needing to add unnecessary subscriber storage capacity and vice versa.

Again, it should be appreciated that the HLR database 156 and GMSC routing table 150 structures shown in Figure 2 are merely illustrative of the high level information storage concept and are not intended to represent the actual data structures that would typically be implemented in such network nodes.
Once again, one of the central problems facing a network operator in such a scenario is the ability to freely distribute subscriber information among multiple HLR nodes.
