HP also ensured that the HP41 remained competitive against newer more mathematically powerful calculators by bringing out the Advantage Module which added some of the financial functions of the HP-12C, complex number and matrix handling like those on the HP-15C and computer science funtions like those of the HP-16C.
HP's first attempt at correcting this problem was the Quad memory module which allowed full expansion of user memory whilst using only 1 slot.
HP supplemented this with additional Extended Memory modules providing additional non-volatile storage on the machine.

Hewlett-Packard Journal: The HP 48SX scientific expandable calculator: innovation and evolution
In one aspect of the HP 48SX design it was not possible to satisfy both HP 41C and HP 28S owners: programming language.
Engineering departments have been much slower to adopt the HP 28S, since it does not have the software exchange capabilities they are accustomed to with the HP 41C.
With optional software, the HP 28S can also use its infrared printer output to "print" its programs to the HP 48SX, where they can be executed after minor or no modification.

To keep the HP-41 clearly at the top-of-the-line, HP released the Advantage Module which added improved mathematical functions including matrix support, computer science functions (bases, conversions etc.), and financial functions.
On HP's previous programmable handhelds, program memory was essentially a single space.
If it was the wrong key, the user could continue to hold it until the display showed "NULL" when meant the function was canceled.

The internal architecture prohibited the addition of more memory, so HP designed an extended memory module that could be seen as secondary storage.
You could not access the data directly, but you could transfer it to and from main memory.
HP's competitor Sharp, when introducing the PC-1211, used a dot matrix of 5×7 dots and displayed the characters in principle as we see them today on computer screens (and, in fact, many LCD screens on various embedded systems); this was later used by HP with the HP-71 handheld computer.

Obviously, each time the 41c is required to make a move, it must look at all nine win lines (in the worst case).
The 41c will then respond with either its first move, or the message, "YOU GO FIRST", depending upon the first RN chosen.
