HP also grew through acquisitions, buying Apollo Computer in 1989, Convex Computer in 1995, and Compaq in 2002.
HP is acknowledged by Wired magazine as the producer of the world's first personal computer, in 1968, the Hewlett-Packard 9100A.
HP called it a desktop calculator because, as Bill Hewlett said, "If we had called it a computer, it would have been rejected by our customers' computer gurus because it didn't look like an IBM.

The first HP calculator with a letter as well as a number was the HP-25C -- this was a version of the HP-25 with "Continuous Memory", in other words the contents of memory were not lost when the calculator was turned off.
HP managed to fit their programs in a small, low-power, handheld unit by using an exceptionally clever and fast method of calculating these functions -- the Cordic technique.
In any case, the HP-75C was closely related to HP handheld calculators, and led directly to the HP-71B which was a smaller handheld computer, but with a calculator mode.

In contrast to the HP 48, where programming is confined to a chapter at the end of the book, the HP-65 manual had the user enter their first program by the fourth page of the introduction.
The HP Journal introduced it as "The Personal Computer" long before that term had become common.
An HP brochure from 1974 proclaimed "This man is holding the smallest programmable computer ever".

HP Virtual Museum: Hewlett-Packard-65 programmable pocket calculator, 1974
The HP-65 was HP's fourth handheld electronic calculator and its third scientific calculator.
Nicknamed "Superstar," the HP-65 was the first magnetic card-programmable handheld calculator, which is why some call it the "world's first handheld computer." The HP-65 could read from and write to magnetic cards, allowing the user to buy program cards from HP or save programs on cards.
Although the HP-65 was similar to the HP-35, HP's first handheld scientific calculator, new features included a card reader, the slot to hold a card below the display and the second slider switch to select program or run modes.

(Others include HP’s smaller, 58-inch 1080p set, and some Mitsubishi models will accept 1080p on their computer inputs.) A bit of perspective before you drop the magazine to rush out and buy one, though: 1080p content is exceedingly rare today and pretty much restricted to material that can only be played back from a PC.
