Topic: Handheld Device Markup Language

 NOTE-Submission-HDML
HDML provides display and navigation models designed to provide intuitive data access using a modified transaction paradigm rather than the document-based paradigm of HTML.
However, the display constraints of handheld devices do not allow the user agent to provide the same degree of context.
This proposal motivates and proposes a mark-up language specifically for handheld devices, called the Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML).

 HDML, Handheld Markup Language
HDML / Handheld Markup Language is for creating web pages that can be accessed by small handheld computers, pagers and mobile phones.
HDML / Handheld Markup Language was invented in 1997 by Unwired Planet, along with the UP Browser which can read it.

HDML (Handheld Device Markup Language) (Linktionary term)
There are cards that display information, cards that prompt for input, and cards that display lists of options for the user to select.
The structure of HDML is a deck of cards instead of a Web page.
An HDML drawback is that it is proprietary, although open for use.

 Wireless and Mobile Computing
Mobile, or "untethered," computing means that the computing device is not continuously connected to the base or central network.
Mobile simply describes a computing device that is not restricted to a desktop.
Generally, "PDA" means the same as "handheld," a term that is more frequently used as the devices have taken on a growing role in corporate computing.

Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) could be considered a type of “presentation language” because it defines the layout, fonts, and graphic elements of a web page.
The first major one written specifically for these devices was the Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML).
There are numerous markup languages currently used for delivering services and content to mobile phones and handheld devices.

UIML: An Appliance-Independent XML User Interface Language
Languages created in the human-computer interaction community are known as User Interface Management Systems (UIMS).
This creates a clear line between the interface code and the internal program logic: interfaces are described with a declarative language, while the internal logic is described by a procedural language.
Formal languages have a specified grammar and are easy to parse.

Creating an effective design that conveys useful information in a minimal device is harder than doing it for an unconstrained device.
They are convinced handheld wireless devices are -- and will remain -- four orders of magnitude less powerful than conventional Internet hosts and thus require optimized transport, applications, and content.
This pure XML/XSL architecture makes it possible for the site to dynamically recognize client devices and style content according to the display requirements of each receiving device.

This section describes what languages are supported, how to get around limitations, and provides an overview of how HomeSite detects and handles a language.
You can extend its language support with the Tag Definitions Library and Visual Tools Markup Language (VTML).

 WAP for Java developers
Handheld wireless devices, however, have a more constrained computing environment compared to desktop computers.
In HTML, there are no functions to check the validity of user input or to generate messages and dialog boxes locally.
Handheld devices tend to have less memory, less powerful CPUs, different input devices, and smaller displays.

WAP also requires that developers format the content using WML (Wireless Markup Language), which, though based on XML, involves new syntax.
To do this, you'll need to be familiar with WAP's architecture, the steps involved in developing applications and some of WAP's problems.
WAP browsers are becoming available for other handheld platforms as well.

 THE WIRELESS APPLICATION PROTOCOL (WAP)
Basically, the characteristics of a WAP device are specified in two classifications: component and communication.
Beside that, the Microbrowser have to know how to interact with different layers of WAP protocols, manage URL process and maintain caches.
For the context of this project, we are most interested in the WAP application environment (WAE) specified in the WAP specifications.

A markup language is a way of adding information to your content that tells the device receiving the content what to do with it.
When working on the internet, you usually make your way through a web page with points and clicks of a mouse.
WAP also uses Wireless Markup Language (WML), which includes the Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML).

TopXML : XML Tools for Information Appliances
We can do the same essential processing, parsing, and transforming tasks with these tools that we have used elsewhere in the book.
The lack of widespread use of P2P networks might be partially due to the single-threaded operating systems that many information appliances employ.
That could be a lot of work to reach all the new devices or networks, especially as new document classes are popping up all the time and old ones are dying out so we'll have to keep on writing new XSL transforms.

HDML - Handheld Device Markup Language
Handheld Device Markup Language is a modified form of HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), and is deigned for use of wireless devices, or small computers such as PDA (Personal Digital Assistants).
This small data unit is more suitable for viewing on handheld devices and is quicker to download onto wireless devices.
Like WML (Wireless Markup Language), HDML is formatted on cards which are smaller units of information than traditional HTML which uses pages.

 ALJONA Interservice - software tools
The first version of the wireless web device interface to this Unified Messaging application used HDML (Handheld Device Markup Language) to format output to the wireless web devices; HDML was supported first because customer research indicated that HDML compatibility was the most prevalent across the existing USA base of older wireless web devices.
Both the PC Web browser interface and the Wireless Web device interface to this Unified Messaging application were custom-developed by Aljona's overseas resources using the following software development technologies:
The use of COM components enables the reusability of middleware code that is common to Wireless Web device functionality and PC Web browser functionality; examples of this are COM components which support the Unified Messaging Repository, the Address Book, and the Get External Mail features.

What is HDML? Handheld Device Markup Language UP.Browser WAP
Back in 1997, a company called Unwired Planet invented HDML and the browser that reads it, called the UP.Browser.
But a lack of support on both ends left HDML temporarily high and dry.
Recently, though, the WAP Forum, founded by Unwired Planet (since evolved into Phone.com and most recently Openwave) and such industry movers as Nokia and Motorola, unveiled WAP, the wireless application protocol, which - in conjunction with this year's smaller, cheaper phones with greater screen real estate - allows much more robust and widespread phone surfing.
