Hard disk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first computer with a hard disk drive as standard was the IBM 350 Disk File, introduced in 1955 with the IBM 305 computer.
From the original use of a hard drive in a single computer, techniques for guarding against hard disk failure were developed such as the redundant array of independent disks (RAID).
Hard disks are also found in network attached storage (NAS) devices, but for large volumes of data are most efficiently used in a storage area network (SAN).

What is hard disk drive? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
There are several interface standards for passing data between a hard disk and a computer.
Hard disk drives are sometimes called Winchester drives, Winchester being the name of one of the first popular hard disk drive technologies developed by IBM in 1973.

Hard disk drive design and technology
The HDD is used by a computer to store operating system (OS) and the user's data.
The drive channel electronics receive data in binary form from the computer and converts them into a current in the head coil.
In fact, this drive is not the newest and the best, it just was randomly chosen to make one point - there has been a huge progress in the field of hard disk drive (HDD) technology in the 40 years, and the rate of this progress is just increasing year after year.

Purely optical disk drives often are used as a secondary form of storage, but the computer to which they are connected is likely to use a magnetic storage medium for primary disk storage.
The basic physical operation of a hard disk drive is similar to that of a floppy disk drive: A hard drive uses spinning disks with heads that move over the disks and store data in tracks and sectors.
Data on a disk is read by passing the head back over the surface of the disk; as the head encounters changes in the stored magnetic field, it generates a weak electrical current that indicates the presence or absence of flux transitions in the originally recorded signal.

Buzzword Definition - Hard Drive/Hard Disk
The hard disk is a round, metal platter in the hard drive of the computer; it stores large amounts of information.
It is sealed into the hard drive and usually installed inside the computer where you can't see it.
Important: Storage of files on the hard drive is permanent until you delete them, as opposed to storage in memory (RAM), which is temporary.

The programs even include disk driver software that provides the capability to override the physical type selections in the system ROM BIOS, enabling a system to use all of a disk, even though the drive-type table in the system ROM BIOS does not have an entry that matches the hard disk.
Most hard disk problems really are not hardware problems; instead, they are soft problems that can be solved by a new LLF and defect-mapping session.
The procedure for physical installation of a hard disk is much the same as the procedure for installing a floppy drive.
