Topic: Hard disk drive partition

Partition (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer engineering, hard disk drive partitioning is the creation of logical divisions upon a hard disk that allows one to apply operating system-specific logical formatting.
Many of them are relatively transparent and allow convenient manipulation of the disk partitions; some however are obsolete in design and are accompanied by numerous quirks.
However GPT disks are not yet supported by the x64 and x86 architectures so GPT disks still cannot be boot disks on these platforms.

Purely optical disk drives often are used as a secondary form of storage, but the computer to which they are connected is likely to use a magnetic storage medium for primary disk storage.
Partitioning is required because a hard disk is designed to be used with more than one operating system.
The basic physical operation of a hard disk drive is similar to that of a floppy disk drive: A hard drive uses spinning disks with heads that move over the disks and store data in tracks and sectors.

After that, we'll cover partitioning the harddrive for use in computer with a single or multiple hard drives and formatting the drives for use.
PARTITION - A partition is a logical division of a hard disk created so that you can have different operating systems on the same hard disk or to create the appearance of having separate hard drives.
This software fools your computer into thinking the drive is a different size than it really is and lets it use all of the drive's storage capacity.

Hard Disk Partitioning and Formatting Procedure
In particular, in a system with multiple hard disk drives be careful to make sure you are working on the right physical disk or you may accidentally end up disturbing the contents of the wrong drive.
This procedure describes how to set up a new, empty hard disk so that it is ready for an operating system to be installed on it.

Each partition has a separate file system created in it.) The "mount point" is just the full path name of the directory that will be the start of the file system in that partition.
If you have any SCSI disk drives, they will be referred to in the Disk Druid partition information table as: sda (1st SCSI disk drive) and sdb (2nd SCSI hard disk drive).
Unless your disk partitioning needs to be extremely complicated, you are better off using Disk Druid.) Disk Druid now displays your current disk partition information.

This was no problem on a floppy disk or on the old, small hard drives of 20, 80, or at most a few hundred MB capacity.
That's because you must erase the drive's directory in order to format the partitions, which means backing all of your files up to another volume(s), which is time consuming if you have a lot of files and applications.
The second partition is for applications; the third one is for document archives; and the fourth is a general dumping ground for everything else -- mostly software installers or anything really big.

With hard drive capacities growing so large [now 500-GB, or half a tera-byte], intelligent partitioning is rapidly becoming an issue.
It's referenced by several universities and disk manufacturers such as Samsung.
