IBM 650 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IBM 650 was one of IBM’s early computers, and the world’s first mass-produced computer.
The 650 is a two-address, bi-quinary coded decimal machine (both data and addresses were decimal), with memory on a rotating drum.
The 650 was specifically designed for users of existing IBM unit record equipment (electro-mechanical punched card-processing machines) upgrading from so-called Calculating Punches, like the IBM 604 model, to computers proper.

Early IBM disk storage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IBM 350 was part of the IBM RAMAC 305, the computer that introduced disk storage technology to the world on September 4, 1956.
It was designed for use with the IBM 7000 series mainframe computers and the IBM 1410.
IBM needed a way to load new microcode into the 370 and developed the floppy disk for this purpose.

 The IBM 650
The 650 is a vacuum-tube logic, drum-memory, decimal -- not binary -- computer.
Support for the 650 was withdrawn by IBM in 1969.
The 650 was a true general-purpose computer, the natural evolution of the CPC (Card Programmed Calculator) to a stored-program computer with a full set of decimal arithmetic, logical, and control instructions, plus (later) the ability to handle alphabetic data.

 IBM Archives: 650 Components
The IBM 407 was used with the 650 system for printed output and punched card input.
The addition of disk storage to the IBM 650 made possible "single step processing." Instead of accumulating data to be processed in stages, transactions could now be processed randomly as they occurred and every record affected by the transaction could be automatically adjusted in the same processing step.
The IBM 654 was used for increased alphabetic input-output capacity.

The University of Kentucky Computing Center
The IBM 650 at the University of Kentucky, circa 1960, and the IBM 1410, circa 1963.
The IBM 650 was replaced by an IBM 1401 in 1962, upgraded to an IBM 1410 later that year, and augmented by an IBM 7040 installed in 1964.
This was replaced in 1967 with an IBM System/360 model 50 which included 256 kilobytes of core memory and six disk drives with a total of 40 megabytes of storage.

 IBM Archives: IBM 650
Announced 50 years ago (in 1953), the IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Data Processing Machine brought a new level of reliability to the young field of electronic computing.
For example, whenever a random processing error occurred, the 650 could automatically repeat portions of the processing by restarting the program at one of a number of breaking points and then go on to complete the processing if the error did not reoccur.
In the early 1950s, IBM began moving rapidly into the new world of electronic data processing.

 Early Computers
The computer I requested (I knew it was hopeless) was an IBM 650.
What really makes the IBM 650 the ancestor of personal computers is that it popularized a concept known as "open shop programming." Prior to the '650 computers, were so expensive that most programmers did not have physical access to them.
Like the IBM 650, it was a decimal machine, but it did not have a fixed word length.

IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Calculator Introduced in 1953
This was intended to be a less powerful version of the 701 Computer, but its easy configuration caused the system to be one of the best selling computers of the 1950's, with about 2000 units installed before it was discontinued in the early 1960's.
The IBM 650 Magnetic Drum Calculator was notable for its high-speed magnetic storage drum permitting rapid access to data.
Magnetic drum storage was supplemented by magnetic disc storage with the IBM 305 RAMAC in 1956.

Statistics are calculated using IBM 650 library programs and the "Bell Interpretive System." These programs are used in areas of process development, process analysis, process modification, process.contro and departmental quality analysis.
The IBM 650, which is now used for the major part of two shifts on problems which can be accommodated within its speed and storage capacity, will be returned to the manufacturer upon installation of the large-scale system.
The equipment being considered are the IBM 7070 with 1401, and the Honeywell 800 with the 400.

The pSeries 650, IBM says, offers the best bang for the buck in the entire pSeries Regatta line of machines, and it is the first volley in a war that IBM is making with Unix server rivals Sun Microsystems and Hewlett-Packard.
Like many IT organizations, IBM is inclined to just throw faster and less expensive hardware at the problem, and that is what the Power4+ is all about.
Being a smaller chip using a more advanced 0.13 micron process, IBM's yields on the chip are better, which dramatically reduces the cost of making the chip.
