IBM PC compatible - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
IBM PC compatible refers to a class of computers which make up the vast majority of smaller computers (microcomputers) on the market today.
Although the IBM PC was designed for expandability, the designers could not anticipate the hardware developments of the '80s.
The origins of this platform came with the decision by IBM in 1980 to market a personal computer as quickly as possible in response to Apple Computer's rapid success in the burgeoning market for low-cost single-user computers — what later came to be known as the "personal computer market".

 IBM PC 5150
IBM PC-5150 is the computer, which caused the death of CP/M computers.
The very first PC’s had only 16 KB RAM and no floppy disk units, they used cassettes to load and store programs (notice that the commands to handle the cassette drives were present in the operating system all the way up to MS-DOS 5!).
Because of the name and the fame of IBM, it became a standard and IBM ran the business computer market up to the end of the 80's.

 IBM 5150 Personal Computer
The IBM Personal Computer ("PC") was not as powerful as many of the other personal computers it was competing against at the time of its release.
This time IBM was determined to do it right - in order to save time and money, instead of developing their own hardware and software, they used already available off-the-shelf components.
The CPU was from Intel, and the operating system (OS) was by Microsoft, who licensed it to IBM as PC-DOS.

BBC NEWS Business Chinese firm buys IBM PC business
IBM, a pioneer of the personal computer business, is selling its PC hardware division to China's number one computer maker Lenovo.

IBM, in terms of market power the Microsoft of its day, failed to spot that hardware would become simply a commodity - a problem which has also hit other once-dominant vendors such as Hewlett-Packard.
