IP address - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An IP address can also be thought of as a street address or a phone number but for a computer or other network device on the internet.
An IP address (internet protocol address) is a unique number that devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP).
There are two methods to assigning IP addresses to computers: static and dynamic.

 The IP Address
Addresses in other places than computer networks: Addresses are used by the postal system to allow a postman to find a person's house; to allow a computer to uniquely identify a location in memory.
Each IP address consists of two parts, the network part (identifying the network number, or LAN collision domain, to which the computer is attached) and the host part (which identifies the host within the local network).
In this format, each byte of the 4 byte address is expressed as a decimal (base 10) number (i.e.

On other networks, a random IP address is assigned each time a computer connects to the network.

illustrates that when a logical AND of the destination IP address and the subnet mask is performed, the subnetwork number remains, which the router uses to forward the packet.
In an IP address of 172.31.1.2, for example, the first octet is 172.
The class of address can be determined easily by examining the first octet of the address and mapping that value to a class range in the following table.

IP address definition of IP address in computing dictionary - by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.
Although the next version of the IP protocol offers a virtually unlimited number of unique addresses (see IPv6), the traditional IP address (IPv4) uses a 32-bit number that defines both the network and the host computer.
The network class determines how many of the 32 bits are used for the network address, leaving the remaining bits for use as the host number (note the numbers of networks and hosts in the table below).
Regardless of what it is, it would make a great debate in a computer science class.

This is because if some other computer doesn't use your current address when you disconnect (if someone else doesn't connect to your ISP in the meantime, for example), you may get the same address when you reconnect.
