 Troubleshooting Novell IPX
IPX Enhanced IGRP is not configured or is misconfigured on the router.
Check the network router configuration commands associated with ipx router rip and the ipx router eigrp global configuration commands to see whether both routing protocols are enabled on the same interface.
Check the ipx router eigrp command entries to see which autonomous systems the router belongs to.

Microsoft Security Bulletin (MS00-073): Frequently Asked Questions
NMPI (Name Management Protocol on IPX) is a protocol that allows computers on a network to determine the names of other computers, in order to allow them to communicate with each other.
Windows platforms implement IPX through the NWLink feature, which allows Windows and Netware computers to communicate.
The IPX NMPI (Netbios Name Management Port Interface) implementation in the affected systems will accept and process a specially-malformed packet sent to it, with potential consequences that could cause that machine to fail or possibly cause a broadcast storm.

 IPX Routing
The Net-Number specifies the IPX network number of the remote-end router.
If there are other NetWare routers (servers) on the LAN interface, the IPX number assigned to the MAX TNT for that interface must be consistent with the number in use by the other routers.
If you enter an IPX network number other than zero, the MAX TNT becomes a seed router, and other routers can learn their IPX network number from the MAX TNT.

IPX network protocol, ipx sap, novell netware network
Bay Networks routers use a boxwide services table rather than a bindery and when the router receives a SAP packet, it compares the contents to that of the service table and resets the age timer to zero if there is a match, or adds the new entry.
Normally the maximum packet size when going through a router is 576 bytes, however LIP has a limit of 4202 bytes although this is configurable downwards dependant on the physical interface.
The 802.3 frame format was designed to be used with the LLC 802.2 header, however IPX was developed before 802.2 was so the 802.3 frame was used without the LLC 802.2 header (hence RAW).

 Cisco Sem3 Lesson 7 - Novell IPX
Assign the same IPX network number(s) to the router that are in use by the IPX devices connected to that router, whether the interface is a LAN or WAN connection.
An IPX network client issues a GNS request to solicit either a direct response from a connected server or a response from a router that tells it where on the internetwork the service can be located.
SAP (Service Advertisement Protocol) - IPX protocol that provides a means of informing network clients, via routers and servers, of available network resources and services.

 IPX
The router associates the specified node-address with the IPX routing process.
Internetwork Packet eXchange (IPX) was developed by Novell in the mid 1980's based on the XNS protocol developed by Xerox.
It is recommended that the router assign the address automatically so that accidental node address duplication does not occur.

Spring 2001: AppleTalk and IPX: Your days are numbered!
Moreover, as stated above, the IPX and AppleTalk processes are not as well optimized on the router and occupy a disproportionate amount of CPU time.
Back when computers were slow and networks were mostly shared, the inefficiencies of IPX and AppleTalk were not as noticeable as they are today.
Fewer and fewer router manufacturers are willing to support IPX and AppleTalk, and those that do usually do so as an afterthought.

 NetWare/IPX on UIUCnet
In NetWare's IPX protocol, a "network" is a logical channel shared by nodes that are capable of communicating directly with each other.
In many ways, the AppleTalk and IPX protocols are similar to each other.
Furthermore, a specific router interface can only be configured to understand one of those types at a time.

Linux IPX-HOWTO: Some Frequently Asked Questions
The Linux IPX software does work with ArcNet and Token Ring interfaces.
Does the IPX software work with Arcnet/Token Ring/etc. ?
If you have more than one interface in your machine you should use the ipx_interface command to manually configure each one, you should not use the `plug n play' configuration.

 SPARCstation IPX SUN4/50 Architecture
The IPX has pretty decent performance for a machine of its age, mostly due to a large (1MB) cache for the CPU.
The SparcStation IPX was one of the most popular "lunchbox" machines made, so they are easy to find and find parts for.
This chip, plus the cache, gives the IPX more than enough horsepower to be a decent webserver.

 Campus IPX Internetworking FAQ
They typically learn the IPX network number from a real router or server and broadcast the location of their service using this network address.
Routing IPX was the only solution that met the current needs of the campus NetWare users.
Until August 1994 IPX packets were not recognized by campus routers and were therefore dropped.

 Chapter 7 Novell IPX
IPX is the layer 3 logical protocol used to route packets, connectionless, operates within same network implementation as TCP/IP, provided that you have a multiprotocol router
The network administrator must specify the correct IPX network address on the Cisco router for the same network where you want to have IPX enabled.
The router maintains a routing table for every IPX protocol that is enabled, unlike IP Rip.

 RFC 1234 (rfc1234)
Unlike IP, which has a unicast redirect mechanism, IPX end systems are responsible for discovering routing information by broadcasting a packet requesting a router that can forward packets to the desired destination.
Host numbers are also exchanged in the IPX headers of packets of IPX's Routing Information Protocol (RIP).
An implementation of this memo will encapsulate IPX datagrams in UDP packets in the same way any hardware implementation might encapsulate IPX datagrams in that hardware's frames.

IPX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Novell built on top of DEC and Xerox's XNS protocol, and is largely responsible for the use of IPX as a popular computer internetworking protocol as a result of its large marketshare of Network Operating System software (Novell NetWare) in the late 1980s through mid 1990s.
It is also now possible to run Novell products without IPX, as they have supported both IPX and TCP/IP since NetWare reached version 5.

 Sangoma - TCP/IP Tutorial
An IPX address consists of a 4-byte Network Number, a 6-byte Node Number, and a 2-byte Socket Number.
C then receives this IPX packet and observes that the IPX packet header's destination address is not its own, so it transmits the packet on network DDEEAADD knowing that E is on that network, using an Ethernet header destination address of 22-5A-4D-8C-C3-DA.
Node C has two Ethernet cards and acts as an IPX router between the two networks.

 IPX-cellence overlooked?
And while IPX as a routing protocol will remain an inherent part of a switch's capabilities for many vendors, judging by the number of respondents, and not their fervor, it seems that the user community has little interest in IPX numbers, let alone any IPX-pectations.
In a recent column I challenged "high-end" IPX users to speak up about what they were doing with IPX that could not be done better with IP.
And while a few users expressed the need to tap into device statistics on the performance of IPX, there was no resounding chorus for such support or for vendors to prove their IPX routing performance.
