IRIX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
IRIX was one of the first Unix flavors to feature a GUI for the main desktop environment, and is widely used in the computer animation industry and for scientific visualization due to its extremely high 3D graphics performance.
IRIX is the System V-based Unix Operating System with BSD extensions developed by Silicon Graphics (SGI) to run natively on their 32 and 64-bit MIPS architecture workstations and servers.
As a result of its Unix underpinnings, it is capable of extremely long uptime, and its XFS filesystem is regarded to be one of the most advanced journaling file systems in the industry.

IRIX was also one of the first UNIX operating systems to support complete 64-bit and 32-bit environment, and the first to support advanced ccNUMA scalable features and graphics features.
IRIX has been instrumental in enabling SGI to deliver generations of leading edge high performance computing, advanced graphics and visual computing platforms.
The current release of IRIX, IRIX 6.5, represents the fifth generation UNIX operating system at SGI, and is a mature UNIX operating system.

Being a UNIX, IRIX is fully multi-user, and while I tried all the pre-configured users on this machine (including root), I mostly used the system for the past two weeks using the "Guest" account.
IRIX was first released in 1987, and by 1995 was already a highly respected UNIX, the first with immense multimedia capabilities!
Most of the software for IRIX is coming in this pre-defined package format, which makes it very easy to handle packages.

Popular examples of this include several headers in /usr/include/sys in IRIX 4.0.5/IDO 4.1.1, which are in eoe1.sw.unix, the mount(1M) manpage in IRIX 5.3, which is in eoe1.man.unix, and /usr/lib/X11/dyDDX/glx.so, also in 5.3, which is in x_eoe.sw.Server.
IRIX 5.x works like IRIX 4.0.x, but one can set the amount of virtual memory which IRIX is allowed to overallocate.
One such bug is present in an unspecified part of IRIX 4.0.x and fixed in IRIX 5.x, and another is in ftpd in IRIX 5.2 and fixed in patch 162 and IRIX 5.3.

 NewsForge My Workstation OS: Irix
For the uninitiated, Irix is the operating system developed by SGI (formerly known as Silicon Graphics) for its RISC-based Unix workstations, which are used for high-end graphics tasks by governmental organisations, film studios, and engineering firms.
When it was first released with Irix 5.3 and the Silicon Graphics Indy in 1993, however, it brought new features to the desktop, some of which are only now being copied by user interface designers.
Although it may lack the visual effects of OS X, and installation is tricky in parts, Irix is a stable desktop OS -- possibly because it runs only on SGI's own hardware.

The bottom line is that, for anyone who wants to write their own software, or even enjoy the wealth of public domain software available in source form on the net, a machine without the IDO is basically worthless.
