IRQ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An IRQ or interrupt request is the means by which hardware components request computing time from the CPU.
In Pentium-class (and some 80486-class) computers the IRQs can be handled by the I/O APIC.
The modern IBM PC compatible computer has 16 IRQ assignments (0-15), each one representing a different physical (or virtual) piece of hardware.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRQ

 Computer System Resource Information
Every IBM compatible computer has a maximum of 15 IRQs and are prioritized in the computer according to the importance of the device.
The first and easiest way would be to attempt to remove devices from the computer to allow IRQs to become free and or substitute for external devices.
However generally it is a good idea to assign devices that you wish to move and do not plan to use to IRQ 9 to allow extra IRQs for a device you may plan to use.

A Guide to Adapters and I/O units.
IRQs are only one of the problems with ISA boards.
When the IRQ is activated, the drive programs for the two adapters are checked, to identify which is on the bus.
The solution is to change the IRQ of the adapter.

PC Hell: Explanation of IRQ's, DMA's, and Conflicts
This is why IRQ conflicts are probably the #1 problem faced by computer users when they add hardware to their computer.
IRQ's are hotlines to the main computer (CPU) that allow devices connected to the computer to signal the CPU that they need immediate attention.
Not all devices require IRQ lines, which is good news because in modern (post IBM XT) computers, we only have 16 of them.

interrupt request - a Whatis.com definition - see also: IRQ
An IRQ (interrupt request) value is an assigned location where the computer can expect a particular device to interrupt it when the device sends the computer signals about its operation.
Since multiple signals to the computer on the same interrupt line might not be understood by the computer, a unique value must be specified for each device and its path to the computer.
Prior to Plug-and Play (PnP) devices, users often had to set IRQ values manually (or be aware of them) when adding a new device to a computer.

 IRQ - Interrupt ReQuest
Since multiple signals to the computer on the same interrupt line might not be understood by the computer, a unique value must be specified for each device and it's path to the computer.
IRQ problems occur because two pieces of hardware try to use the same IRQ.
Some interruptions are caused as a result that different devices are trying to use the same irq (see 'my computer' devices).

PC911 - Friendly Computer Help In Plain English
The simplest way to understand IRQ's is to consider the IRQ as a doorbell… when a device requires CPU attention, it places a signal on its assigned IRQ line.
There is a certain amount of prioritization that occurs due to IRQ lines, but the effect of this prioritization is not really noticeable on today's high-speed computers.
The Intel 8259A IRQ controller chip accepts this interrupt request and passes it on to the processor's interrupt line.

PCRecording.com - - your best source for information on the Digital Audio Workstation.
For instance, if you have a scanner card that is hardwired to IRQ 5 and an old Soundblaster that is hardwired for IRQ 5, there is nothing you can do.
For instance, you may have an old scanner card inserted in an ISA slot that is jumper-configured to IRQ 5.
Most hardware components are now PnP compliant and do not result in IRQ problems.

Learnthat.com IRQ Definition. What is IRQ?
The IRQ is a number set in the computer for the interrupt request.
Newer computers and operating systems use plug'n'play, which allows you to not need to set IRQ values.
In older computers, you had to manually set the IRQ values for devices.
http://www.learnthat.com/define/i/irq.shtml

 Windows 95/98 Support-irq steering
This can occur if the IRQ settings are being read by your computer's BIOS.
Also bear in mind that after mapping to the ISA IRQ architecture occurs, the older ISA rules of one device per IRQ applies.
The assignment is done during the initial POST and can be achieved during normal operation of the computer.
http://cwdixon.com/support/win98_support/irq_steering.htm

 IRQ Conflict
That is no problem when the IRQ is available, but it is a problem if there is another device assigned to that IRQ.
If possible, change the IRQ level of the device which is conflicting with the AccelPRO card.
That can be done in one of two ways depending on the options available on your system and on the other device using the shared IRQ.
http://www.es.com/resources/realimage/error_messages/irq_conflict.htm

General Description of IRQ Sharing in Windows 2000
Per the Plug and Play capability that is defined by the PCI specification, adapters are configured by the computer's BIOS, and are then examined by the operating system and changed if necessary.
It is normal behavior for PCI devices to have IRQs shared among them, especially for Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (APCI) computers with Windows ACPI support enabled.
You cannot change the IRQ setting because the setting is unavailable.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=252420

Real World Technologies - IRQs Explained
The other option is 'Legacy ISA', which means that the system is to reserve this IRQ for use by non-PnP (or Legacy) devices.
For this reason, any device or software requiring an interrupt cannot be made active without rebooting the machine and initializing it's interrupt address.
The theory was that most people did not understand IRQs, and so the more intelligent engineers would handle this difficult situation 'under the covers'.

 Solving PCI IRQ Problems
The IRQ mapping is usually configured at boot time by the PCI BIOS setup, with the the exact assignment algorithm being BIOS-specific.
An IRQ has been assigned, but it has a software conflict.
Instead they can only select one of four "interrupt pins", which are mapped by the motherboard chipset to IRQ lines.

Configuring a PC NIC - IRQ and I/O Base Information
Which IRQ you assign to the card will depend on which IRQs are currently available on the system and on which IRQs the card is designed to access -- some cards present more options than others.
An "Interrupt request" (IRQ) is the means by which a device and the processor get each other's attention.
This may be available, unless the computer has both a serial mouse and a modem installed.

SatisFAXtion - I/O Address and IRQ Conflicts
Never use IRQ 2 in 286/386/486-based computers because IRQ 2 is used to "cascade" the two interrupt controllers.
CAUTION: Never use IRQ 5 in 8088/8086-based computers because IRQ 5 is used by your hard drive.
The best way to avoid a conflict is to know the I/O address and/or IRQ used by every device in your computer before adding a new device.

Annoyances.org - re: IRQ Sharing (Windows 98 Discussion Forum)

 Re: 3 PCI NIC's on OpenBSD 2.6(x86) sharing IRQ's
This is with an Intel 440BX SMP-capable MB with only one CPU installed, in which a quad Adaptec Tulip card can't share IRQs with external fxp and lmc devices.
One addition: I have a system in which sharing PCI IRQs causes slowdowns and lockups, on recent hardware.

 FAQ on IRQ's
Just about everything else on your computer will own its assigned IRQ from the time you power on the computer to the time you shut off.
Hopefully, you will now have a better picture of what the IRQs are and how they work, and a few secrets for adding more hardware to a PC than you might think by creatively sharing IRQs.
While there are a LOT of serial devices that can use non-standard IRQs, we do NOT recommend them because they are really a turkey to set up in your communication software, and they also use up valuable IRQs that could better be used elsewhere.

PCMCIA IRQ Routing on Windows XP
Therefore, system vendors should ensure that ISA IRQs are available to CardBus controllers in the system until the logo requirements described in this article help phase out this problem.
The Interrupt Service Routine (ISR) in the driver for the card was not designed to return the proper indication that a given IRQ was generated by its respective device.
CardBus cards are essentially PCI devices, and their interrupts are routed to PCI IRQs as defined by the PCI specification.

IRQTUNE -- A Linux IRQ Priority Optimizer
When irqtune was first released, some experimental changes were made to the kernel to solve the IRQ priority problem by use of a round-robin, balanced priority system that was incompatible with irqtune.
We must change the IRQ of a device by physical restrapping--we can't do it by reprogramming the priority alone.
Even though they have one of the slowest data rates (relative to a disk), they are the largest consumer of interrupts and are extremely sensitive to interrupt latency (the time from when a device yanks the IRQ line until its ISR is executed).
