ITU-T - Waikato Linux Users Group
ITU specifications are horrible to read, they refer all over the place to each other, and feel like they should be read by a computer.
ITU-T is responsible for the X509 and H.323 standards in the computing world, as well as lots of things to do with POTS standards and interoperability.

ICANN Letter from ITU on Telephony-Related TLDs
Even if this were considered to be acceptable practice, the ITU would suggest that particularly careful reflection is warranted as to the global long-term benefits to the Internet community in allocating certain TLDs at this time—especially considering both the irreversibility of such a decision, and that it may preclude, perhaps other, more beneficial, future uses.
[6] The ITU Constitution and Convention, which are recognized as binding treaty instruments, set forth the functions and role of the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector, the World Telecommunication Standardization Assemblies, as well as the Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB).
The role of the TSB Director as well as that of ITU Member States with respect to the allocation and management of numbering resources is defined in Resolution 20: “Procedures for allocation and management of international numbering resources”, adopted by ITU Member States at the World Telecommunication Standardization Conference (Geneva, 1996).

ITU-T Rec. G.7715/Y.1706 (06/2002) Architecture and requirements for routing in the automatically switched optical networks
ITU draws attention to the possibility that the practice or implementation of this Recommendation may involve the use of a claimed Intellectual Property Right.
ITU takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of claimed Intellectual Property Rights, whether asserted by ITU members or others outside of the Recommendation development process.
The ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) is a permanent organ of ITU.

On the other hand, ITU would like to encourage industry to bring their work to existing, rather than new SDOs, wherever possible, so that unnecessary overlapping of work can be avoided at an early stage.
This is of course in addition to the support that we have from ITU itself and collaboration with other SDOs.

Although the framework described by ITU is a very good staring point, it is certainlyabstract, and leaves many open questions when implementation issues are considered.
Similarly, the attribute certificates framework defined by ITU provides a foundation upon which a Privilege Management Infrastructure (PMI) can be built.
Without its use, it is impractical and unrealistic to expect that large scale digital signature applications can become a reality.

Since the ITU-T is part of the ITU, which is a United Nations Organization (UNO), its standards carry more formal international recognition than those of most other organizations that publish technical specifications of a similar form.
This makes the standardization approval process in the ITU-T much more responsive to the needs of rapid technology development than in the ITU's historical past.
