 RFC 791 (rfc791) - Internet Protocol
Motivation The Internet Protocol is designed for use in interconnected systems of packet-switched computer communication networks.
The maximal internet header is 60 octets, and a typical internet header is 20 octets, allowing a margin for headers of higher level protocols.
IHL The internet header field Internet Header Length is the length of the internet header measured in 32 bit words.

 Internet Protocols (IP)
Internet protocols were first developed in the mid-1970s, when the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) became interested in establishing a packet-switched network that would facilitate communication between dissimilar computer systems at research institutions.
IP is documented in RFC 791 and is the primary network-layer protocol in the Internet protocol suite.
Documentation of the Internet protocols (including new or revised protocols) and policies are specified in technical reports called Request For Comments (RFCs), which are published and then reviewed and analyzed by the Internet community.

 IP Version 6 (IPv6)
Internet Protocol Version 6 is abbreviated to IPv6 (where the "6" refers to it being assigned version number 6).
The previous version of the Internet Protocol is version 4 (referred to as IPv4).
The Next Generation Transition working group in the IETF is responsible for designing the mechanisms and procedures to support the transition of the Internet from IPv4 to IPv6.

TCP/IP, Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol
In 1985, Dan Lynch and the Internet Architecture Board held a three day workshop on TCP/IP for the computer industry, which was attended by about 50 researchers and 250 vendor representatives.
The Internet TCP/IP's open and efficient inter-networking design has made it the most widely used network protocol in the world.

 IP
The Internetwork Protocol (IP) [RFC791] provides a best effort network layer service for connecting computers to form a computer network.
Each computer is identified by one or more gloablly unique IP addresses.
This provides considerable robustness from the failure of either links or routers, but does not guarentee reliable delivery.
