Topic: Internet protocol suite

Internet protocol suite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For TCP/IP this is the Internet Protocol (IP)
The Internet protocol suite came from work done by DARPA in the early 1970s.
By the summer of 1973, Kahn and Cerf had soon worked out a fundamental reformulation, where the differences between network protocols were hidden by using a common internetwork protocol, and instead of the network being responsible for reliability, as in the ARPANET, the hosts became responsible.

RFC 2502 (rfc2502) - Limitations of Internet Protocol Suite for Distribute
In summary, it is clear that a hybrid of best-effort and reliable multicast (not necessarily all in the same protocol) is needed to support DIS and HLA, and that the low-latency, reliable part of this hybrid is not available in the Internet protocol suite.
Distributed Interactive Simulation is the name of a family of protocols used to exchange information about a virtual environment among hosts in a distributed system that are simulating the behavior of objects in that environment.
Internet Protocol Suite facilities needed and not yet available for large-scale distributed simulation in shared networks: These derive from the need for real-time multicast with established quality of service in a shared network.

RFC 1349 (rfc1349) - Type of Service in the Internet Protocol Suite
This is because optimal routing for those TOS values would require that routing protocols be cognizant of the semantics of the TOS values and use special algorithms to compute routes for RFC 1349 Type of Service July 1992 them.
Internet researchers are actively studying this problem, and are optimistic that they will be able to invent ways in which the Internet Architecture can evolve to support resource guarantees while preserving the advantages of connectionless networking.
While this limitation is in some sense a limitation of current routing protocols rather than of this specification, this specification contributes to the problem by specifying that there are a number of legal TOS values that have no currently defined semantics.

 2 The Internet Protocol Suite
In Figure 2.8 an overview is given of the main protocols used in the TCP/IP protocol suite and the relations between them.
In this and other documents about network protocols, the terms  node,  host and  router are used often.
To be able to  address each  endpoint of the internet from every other endpoint on the same internet, a new unified address space must be defined for the entire internet.

 Cisco - TCP/IP
Support for at least part of the Internet protocol suite is available from virtually every computer vendor.
The Internet, on the other hand, is the collection of networks that permits communication between most research institutions, universities, and many other organizations around the world.
Protocols such as ARP and ICMP for IP and End System-to-Intermediate System (ES-IS) for OSI must still be supported by routers running Integrated IS-IS.

 [No title]
A vendor who develops computer communication software for the Internet protocol suite (or any other protocol suite!) and then fails to maintain and update that software for changing specifications is going to leave a trail of unhappy customers.
Every ICMP error message includes the Internet header and at least the first 8 data octets of the datagram that triggered the error; more than 8 octets MAY be sent; this header and data MUST be unchanged from the received datagram.
A good-faith implementation of the protocols that was produced after careful reading of the RFC's and with some interaction with the Internet technical community, and that followed good communications software engineering practices, should differ from the requirements of this document in only minor ways.

 Internet Protocol Suite (Linktionary term)
This is because the Internet protocols were designed to accommodate any underlying network technology.
The protocols listed here are described in various Internet RFCs and many are described under their own heading.
POP (Post Office Protocol) A protocol that stores mail for users on a server and forwards that mail to them when they log on.

 IP
The Internetwork Protocol (IP) [RFC791] provides a best effort network layer service for connecting computers to form a computer network.
Each computer is identified by one or more gloablly unique IP addresses.
This provides considerable robustness from the failure of either links or routers, but does not guarentee reliable delivery.

Overview of Internet - PamLB - Protocol Suite
IP defines the internet datagram as the unit of information passed across the internetwork.
TCP/IP communication is primarily point-to-point, meaning each communication is from one point (or host computer) in the network to another point or host computer.
ARP allows the source host or router to find the MAC address of the destination host on the same network segment, given only the network layer address of the destination system.
