Trolls may also provide a valuable service by making people question the validity of what is read both on the Internet, and from other sources.
One early reference to "troll" found in the Google Usenet archive was by user "Mark Miller", directed toward the user, "Tad", on February 8, 1990 [1].

Until software design is turned into a more precise science instead of having DisciplineEnvy, it will be hard to distinquish/define "troll" outside of obvious violations.
A troll doesn't seek either destruction or recognition.
May follow from definition above, but isn't automatically a troll since it could merely be a very dominating personality.

Another thing you can do is to bookmark a site where you have access to whois information.
Oddly, I've found a couple where the Internet Provider name, from a European domain, doesn't match the owner of the Internet Provider number, which originated in Canada.
They make it into a game, just to see if they can get onto a site.
