Jargon File - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jargon File (hereafter referred to as 'jargon-1' or 'the File') was begun by Raphael Finkel at Stanford in 1975.
The original Jargon File was a collection of hacker slang from technical cultures including the MIT AI Lab, the Stanford AI Lab (SAIL), and others of the old ARPANET AI/LISP/PDP-10 communities including Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN), Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU), and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI).
The new version cast a wider net than the old Jargon File; its aim was to cover not just AI or PDP-10 hacker culture but all the technical computing cultures wherein the true hacker-nature is manifested.

 talk.origins/Evolution Echo Jargon File
Jargon link names; for HTML authors who want to refer to the Jargon file and Biographica.
Although it is the eventual intention that other documents can make references to definitions in the Jargon file, it is probably not advisable to do so until the issues of how best to divide the file up are resolved.
The software listed in the Jargon File will also work to extract entries from Biographica.

The Jargon File (hereafter referred to as `jargon-1' or `the File') was begun by Raphael Finkel at Stanford in 1975.

There are doubtless rich veins of jargon yet untapped in the scientific computing, graphics, and networking hacker communities; also in numerical analysis, computer architectures and VLSI design, language design, and many other related fields.

Glossary of Internet & Web Jargon
URLs change frequently because the documents are moved to new computers, the file structure on the computer is reorganized, or sites are discontinued.

 CNN.com - The lingua franca of the Internet - Jun 24, 2005
Download means to copy a file from a server on the Internet -- or another network -- to a local computer.
Short for peer to peer, P2P is a form of file sharing where users trade files with each other, versus downloading them from a centralized server.
A plug-in is an additional piece of software that increases functionality of by allowing it to read a format that wasn't supported in its base form.

For example, writing a file on the lpt spooler's directory will invoke the spooling daemon, which prints the file.
For example, a program that handles file name defaulting in a particularly useless way, or a routine that could easily have been coded using only three ac's, but randomly uses seven for assorted non-overlapping purposes, so that no one else can invoke it without first saving four extra ac's.
(The file ends up looking like a paper document would if somebody crunched the paper into a wad.) Since such compression usually takes more computations than simpler methods such as counting repeated characters (such as spaces) the term is doubly appropriate.

LWN: Major release of the Jargon File
I see that the new revision airbrushes certain points of computing history out of the picture, as they're no longer "live usage".
There have been many content changes as well: * The entries have been systematically weeded out with Google searches, so the File reflects live usage better than ever before.
The file masters have been converted from Texinfo to XML-Docbook; as a result, * There is a real change-log file; you can see which entries have been added, changed, or deleted in each release since 4.0.0.

Jargon File 3.0.0 - metasyntactic variable
Some jargon terms are also used as metasyntactic names; barf and mumble, for example.
In filenames, a common convention is that any filename beginning with a metasyntactic-variable name is a scratch file that may be deleted at any time.
To avoid confusion, hackers never (well, hardly ever) use `foo' or other words like it as permanent names for anything.

 jargon, node: Hanlon's Razor
This probably reflects the hacker's daily experience of environments created by well-intentioned but short-sighted people.
Quoted here because it seems to be a particular favorite of hackers, often showing up in sig blocks, fortune cookie files and the login banners of BBS systems and commercial networks.
A similar epigram has been attributed to William James, but Heinlein more probably got the idea from Alfred Korzybski and other practitioners of General Semantics.
