See just-in-time compilation for the technique for improving the performance of interpreted programs in computing.
However, one drawback of the JIT system is that the re-order level is determined by historical demand.
With present technology, for example, an ear of corn cannot be grown and delivered to order [[1]].

JIT Training Article - Just in time manufacturing Consultant UK
In time, of course, we learned that the kanban was the last improvement step of many, not the first.
We might only want one backframe for our industrial digger but the 3-hour set-up time and the way in which the machine shop superintendent was measured meant that he wasn't going to machine in any quantity less than 20.
As well as addressing the manufacturing processes, we learned that the JIT approach considered other contributors to improved quality.

The JiTS engages the student with the subject matter on distinct cognitive levels, with the goal of increasing the student's sustained engagement in higher-order thinking (analysis, synthesis, evaluation).
The JiTS is a carefully structured but open-sided course plan designed for professor-mediated active learning that is technologically enriched to ensure currency and responsiveness to world events as well as to accommodate and appeal to diverse learning styles.
The structure of JiTS is best described as "levels of learning." The accompanying web page (see sidebar) describes these levels and provides examples.

 Just in Time Technology
Just in time technology is a notion whose time has come.
In some quarters this just in time approach will be judged heresy, as the assumption for these folks is that more technology is always better.
Instead of installing 2-3 computers per classroom that will be used (maybe) 15% of the time, the district cuts its order for 2000 computers down to 1000, invests heavily in professional development, and realizes 85% utilization by moving the equipment to where it will be welcomed (and used).

Thus, JIT manufacturing management was developed based on this problems.

The JIT inventory control system may also require a significant upgrade in existing computer systems.
With this new dependence on an integrated system, one can see how important each and every workstation in the JIT environment becomes.
Kanban uses a manual pull system; the initial pull is exerted by the final assembly schedule.

 Define just-in-time compiler - a definition from Whatis.com - see also: JIT
In the Java programming language and environment, a just-in-time (JIT) compiler is a program that turns Java bytecode (a program that contains instructions that must be interpreted) into instructions that can be sent directly to the processor.
After you've written a Java program, the source language statements are compiled by the Java compiler into bytecode rather than into code that contains instructions that match a particular hardware platform's processor (for example, an Intel Pentium microprocessor or an IBM System/390 processor).
However, the virtual machine handles one bytecode instruction at a time.

If, however, we make the next logical move in the digital environment, where digital copies of material are created, delivered, and paid for just when, and only when, a reader needs them, we will have abandoned the enterprise of shared resources on which the political economy of traditional libraries is built.
This being so, it is reasonable to speculate about a future in which the costs for digital information remain significant.
He looked to mass-produced paper and rapid, steam-driven printing presses to transform the cost of providing information to readers, just as we look to the computer.

As an indication though of the difficulty of implementing JIT in a Western environment when General Motors instituted an Andon for line stoppage workers were simply not prepared to take responsibility for stopping the line.
Although, obviously, as the originators of the approach Toyota had much to learn and no doubt made mistakes, this illustrates the time that can be required to successfully implement a JIT system in a large company.
However you should be absolutely clear that implementing a JIT system is a task that cannot be undertaken lightly.

Flexible work force: workers should be trained to operate several machines, to perform maintenance tasks, and to perform quality inspections.
In its largest sense, JIT is not the same thing as a kanban system, and a kanban system is not required to implement JIT (some companies have instituted a JIT program along with a MRP system), although JIT is required to implement a kanban system and the two concepts are frequently equated with one another.

Just-in-time compilation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computing, just-in-time compilation (JIT), also known as dynamic translation, is a technique for improving the performance of bytecode-compiled programming systems, by translating bytecode into native machine code at runtime.
In a JIT environment, bytecode compilation is the first step, reducing source code to a portable and optimizable intermediate representation.
In a bytecode-compiled system such as Limbo programming language, Smalltalk, UCSD P-System, Perl, GNU CLISP, or early versions of Java, source code is translated to an intermediate representation known as bytecode.

A good example would be a car manufacturer that operates with very low inventory levels, relying on their supply chain to deliver the parts they need to build cars.
This inventory supply system represents a shift away from the older "just in case" strategy where producers carried large inventories in case higher demand had to be met.
The parts needed to manufacture the cars do not arrive before nor after they are needed, rather they arrive just as they are needed.

Labor Notes - Auto Workers Use ‘Just-in-Time’ Leverage To Organize Parts Plants
This time, GM and DaimlerChrysler said that they were “close” during negotiations, but would not elaborate on their roles.
George Windau, who works at Jeep in Toledo, said the strike was “so devastating on production simply because of the ‘just in time’ supply philosophy used in the plants, which relies on a steady and continuous flow of these parts from Johnson Controls.”
Though using the leverage of “just in time” production against the Big Three showed the strength of the union, it is likely that this strike’s fate, like the one in 1997, was largely predetermined behind the closed doors of UAW and Big Three boardrooms.
