I was easily convinced that flashcards are THE only way to efficiently learn kanji (the Japanese have 10 years to learn them, we gaijin don't).
However, for the Kanji Proficiency Test for example, you need a lot more (level 1 needs 6000 kanji).
When I started learning kanji, as part of my 2 years Japanese course in Tokyo, I wanted to learn efficiently, have fun and make sure that I would not forget them.

These are still the same classifications we use in modern times:
An ideograph, combining pictographs and symbols to express a complex idea.
In modern times, when Kanji are used in a word of native Japanese origin, the pronunciation of that character is called a Kun-yomi "reading", and is usually followed by an inflectional stem written with Hiragana script known as the Okurigana (or kana which follow).

You do it the Heisig way or it is the highway with this book.
Personally,I don't think there is any point in learning how the character is pronounced right at the start as most Kanji have several different readings depending where they are positioned.
