Kernel (computer science) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In computer engineering, the kernel is the core of an operating system.
It is a piece of software responsible for providing secure access to the machine's hardware and to various computer processes (a process is a computer program in a state of execution).
Microkernels are often used in embedded robotic or medical computers because most of the OS components reside in their own private, protected memory space.

Air Traffic Control; Kernel Machine; Ivor Catt
Kernel computers are designed to have enough networking to avoid all of the problems of the Spiral wafer.
In order to develop the software for the Kernel Computer, current computer technology will be used, networked in the Kernel adjacent processor array.
The primary problem facing the Kernel Machine is the predominance of single-processor computer solutions and the natural inclination of programmers to force software fixes on to inappropriate hardware.

Linux kernel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "kernel" properly refers to the low-level system software that provides a hardware abstraction layer, disk and filesystem control, multi-tasking, load-balancing, networking and security enforcement.
At the time, the GNU project had created many of the components required for a free operating system, but its own kernel, the GNU Hurd, was incomplete and unavailable.
Distributions of software based on this kernel are called GNU/Linux distributions.

 Operating system
In computing, an operating system''' ('''OS) is the system software responsible for the direct control and management of computer hardwarehardware and basic system operations.
Research and development of new kinds of operating systems is an active subfield of computer science.
Today, the term is most often used colloquially to mean all the software which "comes with" a computer system before any computer softwareapplications/ are installed.

 Troubleshooting and Repair Strategies
Recently, a group of computer scientists (all male) announced that computers should be referred to as female.
However, another group of computer scientists (all female) think that computers should be referred to as male.
The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.

Kernel Configuration: dealing with the unexpected
Even though most of my computers are old-fashioned and are happilyrunning version 2.0, this article concentrates on Linux-2.2, even if the differences, at the level we face things, are negligible.
While you can build the kernel on one computer and run it elsewhere, this is not common practice for anyone but network administrators (who manage several computers at once) and GNU/Linux distributors (who need to build something that works for everyone).
Since the kernel is the only software allowed to deal with hardware, the choice of what parts ought to be included and what parts ought to be discarded greatly shapes what the final compiled image can do and what it can't.

We show that MKM, when coupled with a user level monitor and visualization system (the PIE system), is able to fulfill the double role of visualizing kernel behavior in the presence of a workload as well as the influence of the operating system kernel on user algorithms.
They have also implemented a run-time environment that supports the parallel execution of these C programs on the RP3 computer, a shared-memory, 64-way MIMD machine built at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.
The design approach divides the implementation into three components: (1) basic mechanisms implemented in the kernel, (2) long term policy implemented in a server, and (3) optional user implementation of short term policy.

 Image at opensource encyclopedia
In computer graphics and digital image processing, the word image almost always means digital image or, by extension, any computer description of an image, e.g.
A related computer science usage is the expression executable image -- meaning a structured file containing machine instructions and data, which can be loaded into a process's virtual memory and executed.
In computer science the word image can also mean an exact (bit-by-bit) copy of the contents of some device, such as a hard disk, floppy disk, CD-ROM, etc..

PC Magazine: Linux Reborn: Kernel 2.4
Kernel subsystems like the networking stack and file I/O are now fully multithreaded.
For administrators planning Web infrastructures, the new Linux kernel support for multiple CPUs may change the way Linux is scaled, because it is now possible to run on fewer (but more powerful) boxes with multiple processors rather than on multiple, cheaper nodes with single CPUs.
With new connectivity options, however, it is a promising first step toward getting Linux to work with the next generation of digital devices, and this might mean an even friendlier version of the operating system in the future.

LKML: "Heikki Tuuri": Re: 2.6.0-test2-mm3 and mysql
The three 2.4 kernel computers have worked ok. My hypothesis is that there are bugs in drivers of Linux.
On an old 2.2 kernel computer I was able to get read errors in 30 seconds.
That would explain why some computers work ok. Or there are Linux kernel bugs which only manifest on certain hardware under certain file i/o workload.

Light Computers - Kernel - What is Kernel/What Does Kernel Mean/Help with Kernel/Abbriviation or Explanation
Because the code that makes up the kernel is needed continuously, it is usually loaded into computer storage in an area that is protected so that it will not be overlaid with other less frequently used parts of the operating system.
A kernel may also include a manager of the operating system's address spaces in memory or storage, sharing these among all components and other users of the kernel's services.

They were right, except for two details: First, many computer users are scared of the command line -- and APT is a command line utility.
Second, even for users not afraid of the command line, setting download repositories and other parameters was not easy unless you spent enough of your time administering computers to remember all the text commands it took to make APT do what you wanted.
And finally, in late 2004, Synaptic became so lovable that I would no longer want to have a desktop computer without it.

The main goal of a project is to implement a framework for implementation of any security model (unlike other secure Linux kernel projects).
The project seems to be in early stages of development (alpha code).
The goal of the project is to create the most secure system possible while requiring minimum configuration changes.
