Topic: Keydrives

 Keydrive - Simple English Wikipedia
Some keydrives have a light that blinks to show if it is being used by the computer.
Some people use keydrives instead of floppy disks because they hold more files and are much more durable.
Many different capacities exist, the most commonly used one is 128 megabytes, but capacities from 8 megabytes up to 2 gigabytes have been produced.

 KeyDrive II
KeyDrive has been written in highly optimised code to be as fast as possible.
KeyDrive is developed to run on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
KeyDrive works by brokering file read/write tasks received from Windows and only delivering the portion of the data required by Windows.
http://www.keydrive2.com/en/faq.html

 KeyDrive
Data is kept encrypted - always - and is decrypted for the user at his or her PC only as it is handled (in computer memory) or viewed on the monitor.
KeyDrive is built to work on all modern versions of Windows including Windows XP.
The applications for applying encryption to certain files are numerous: because KeyDrive works at a low level (as a device driver) you can use it to secure even executable programs.

 keydrive
Some computers have the ability to boot up from keydrives, but that capability must be supported in the computer's BIOS.
Keydrives are also impervious to the scratches and dust that have plagued previous forms of portable storage media like Compact Discs and floppy disks.
Microsoft's Windows Me, 2000 and XP are able to access them, but Windows 98, which was one of the first OSes with much support for USB, needs specialized software for each different type of USB storage device it encounters.

IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 00, 2002 — Portable Add-ons, a leading supplier of mobile computing software and hardware, today announced the launch of the KeyDrive family, a simple but very secure computer data encryption solution designed to address the data security concerns of consumer and network administrators alike.
Portable Add-ons, founded in February 1992, was established to meet the increasing demand for high quality peripheral products in the mobile computing sector.
“Protecting and encrypting data such as credit card numbers, contact information and applications on a user’s laptop computer or sensitive data like corporate documents, payroll information and personal files on a network computer is made simple with this easy-to-implement solution,” explained Dr. David Case, creator of the KeyDrive products.

 MacAddict » Reviews » August 2002
We received our KeyDrive with its write-protect mode turned on, and the dang switch is so small that we didn't notice for two full days (the lack of documentation on this feature didn't help).
Flash memory is getting cheaper all the time, and the $69, 64MB KeyDrive we reviewed lowers the price bar almost to the $1 per megabyte level; we wouldn't be surprised to see this device—or a competitor's—selling well below $1 per meg by the time you read this.
For comparison, portable FireWire drives currently run around a dime per MB; even RAM hasn't commanded such a premium since the early nineties.

 Floppy disk - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch
With the arrival of mass Internet access, cheap Ethernet, and USB "keydrives", the floppy was no longer necessary for data transfer either, and the floppy disk was essentially superseded.
Mass backups were now made to high capacity tape drives such as DAT or streamers, or written to CDs or DVDs.

Saving data from a damaged USB keydrive
Rather than send your keydrive to a commercial entity for expensive drive recovery service, you may consider purchasing a software utility program that can recover files.
Some software products that perform recovery functions for Windows-based systems include Stellar Phoenix Digital Media Recovery, Norton Systemworks, and Zero Assumption Recovery.
Inquire with your district IT department, as they may already have a disk recovery tool licensed that can be used on your keydrive.

FeedDemon Tips: Using USB keydrive to synchronize FeedDemon state between machines
So when you are changing Cache folder location on a second machine to a folder on your USB keydrive, contents of that folder is going to be overwritten with FeedDemon's Cache from the machine you are configuring.
Note: If you're using Windows 2000 or XP then reformatting the USB drive to NTFS, if practical, seems to improve performance a lot especially when switching Channel Groups
FeedDemon's license permits installing it on multiple computers (provided that you're the only user), so for example you may want to use it at home and in the office.

Also, because the iPod shuffle is a bit wider than the USB keydrive it resembles, it won't fit on some computers (Apple's eMac, for example).
It's not so convenient because, by default, you must charge the iPod shuffle with your computer, and a computer isn't always handy.
Both these issues can be addressed by Apple accessories that cost nearly a third of the 512MB iPod shuffle-the $29 iPod USB Power Adapter, the $29 iPod shuffle External Battery Pack (which provides 20 additional hours of playtime with two AAA batteries) and the $29 iPod shuffle Dock.

The KeyDrive's industrial-strength encryption makes hacking into a computer extremely difficult even for an expert.
A tiny device that works in conjunction with software, the KeyDrive attaches to a key chain and plugs into your laptop's USB port.
Once the software is installed and you're through the setup—a tedious task—the hard drive is not accessible unless the KeyDrive is plugged in and the password is entered.
