Roberts, a respected computer scientist with good management skills who also had networking experience (which was a rare commodity in those days) was the ideal candidate to lead ARPA's networking project.
His first choice was a young computer scientist named Larry Roberts.
Roberts was currently working on graphics at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory.

 Internet History - Lawrence Roberts
Just as time-shared computer systems have permitted groups of hundreds of individual users to share hardware and software resources with one another, networks connecting dozens of such systems will permit resource sharing between thousands of users.
Roberts presented a paper called Multiple Computer Networks and Intercomputer Communication that summarized the ARPANET plan at the ACM Symposium on Operating System Principles at Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in October 1967.

 Silicon Radio/Larry Roberts
Roberts, winner of the 1981 Erickson Award, began thinking about creating a computer network way back in 1962.
Although he was convinced the concept of computers communicating with each other would be "the next step of evolution for the computer field and the next major step for mankind," not everyone shared his enthusiasm.
Phone company executives told Roberts that transferring information over the Internet via a concept called packet switching would "blow up in his face." Even the academic and research communities didn't want anything to do with a publicly accessible Internet system.

Roberts has received numerous awards for his work, including the Secretary of Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Harry Goode Memorial Award from the American Federation of Information Processing, the IEEE Computer Pioneer Award, the Interface Conference Award, and, in 1982, the L.M. Ericsson prize for research in data communications.
While at ARPA he was responsible for the design, initiation, planning and development of ARPANET, the world's first major packet network, now called the Internet.

State Rep. Larry Roberts recovers from hiccups (phillyBurbs.com)
State Rep. Larry Roberts, D-Fayette, was back in his Uniontown office Tuesday after being released this week from a Pittsburgh hospital, where he was being treated since July 19 so doctors could try to determine the cause of the problem.
Roberts, a six-term state lawmaker, is running for re-election in November against Republican Harry E. Albert III and independent candidates Timothy S. Mahoney, Gary Gearing, and Jerry Janosek.
Neither Roberts' staff nor the House Democratic Communications Office described the treatment that helped Roberts get a handle on the hiccups.

Consists largely of links to Villiers' works, but don't miss the appropriately lurid illustrations to the first edition of the translation of "A Torture by Hope." [Larry Roberts]
This essay, published in Science Fiction Studies, includes some discussion of Villiers' Gothic (and philosophical) parody Claire Lenoir.

Recently we have initiated studies with our collaborator Dr. Laurel Trainor which are investigating how music training alters auditory brain development in children (Shahin et al, submitted; Trainor et al., 2003).
We have also found that the same brain responses that are enhanced by laboratory training are enhanced when evoked by musical sounds in highly skilled musicians (Shahin et al., 2003; Roberts et al., 2004).
