LaserWriter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The combination of the LaserWriter printer, publishing software Adobe PageMaker, the GUI-based Macintosh, is generally considered to have sparked the desktop publishing (DTP) revolution.
But at the heart of the Laserwriter's raster image processor lay the Adobe PostScript interpreter, a feature that would ultimately transform the landscape of computer desktop publishing.
The LaserWriter has an interactive PostScript interpreter: one can actually connect a serial terminal to the printer and, by typing "executive", communicate with the printer's computer.

Introducing the LaserWriter 8 Driver Version 8.6
LaserWriter 8.6 adds the new Euro glyph to this set when the font uses the Mac Standard encoding (bit 1 of the Font Classification work in the font's FOND resource is set).
LaserWriter 8 has always maintained a set of glyphs which, when printed, are pulled from the Symbol font rather than from the font used on the Macintosh.
LaserWriter 8.6 now dynamically lays out the popups, given the current system font and uses the system's popup menus.

 LaserWriter CopyBits Support
This is a useful API, however, unfortunately, LaserWriter 8.4.x and earlier PostScript printer drivers from Apple have not supported all of the capabilities of the CopyBits() call to draw images.
Although the CLUT may contain many index values which have the background color and are therefore, in principle, transparent when displayed onscreen, the driver searches the look-up table for the first index which corresponds to the background color.
After a stint at General Magic, David now works at RBI Software Systems (http://www.rbi.com) as a contractor to Apple and Adobe on their PostScript printer drivers.

However, you need not have the actual AppleTalk connectors on your computer.

 LaserWriter 8.6 and Fonts
The LaserWriter 8 driver uses two different font queries; one is for the availability of a specific set of fonts, while the other is for a full list of fonts available in the printer.
As described above in the section LaserWriter 8 Spooling and Fonts, during the second pass prior to playing back the spooled application drawing, LaserWriter 8 first queries the printer to determine the availability of the fonts that were used in the drawing.
LaserWriter 8, when printing directly to a printer, but not to a print queue server or to disk, can delay the downloading of a given font to just before the start of the page with that font's first occurrence.

 LaserWriter Driver Recommendations
The LaserWriter 8.1.2 driver was the last version of the LaserWriter 8.x driver tested with any version of System 6.x.

System 7.0.x should use the LaserWriter 8.3.4 or LaserWriter 8.4 driver WITHOUT the Desktop Printing extension.

Although UNIX workstations are the traditional source of LPR printing, LPR is defined in Internet RFC 1179, and can be implemented on any computer using TCP/IP networking.
Since most Apple LaserWriter printers accept print jobs transmitted only by AppleTalk, customers often need solutions for getting their print job from a TCP/IP based computer to an AppleTalk-only printer.
This class of solutions applies to all the LaserWriters listed in the previous table, as well as the LaserWriter Select 310 printer.
