Topic: Legacy system

Legacy system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A legacy system is an existing computer system or application program which continues to be used because the user (typically an organization) does not want to replace or redesign it.
Perhaps the term "legacy" is only an effort by computer industry salesmen to generate artificial churn in order to encourage purchase of unneeded technology.
If legacy software only runs on antiquated hardware, the cost of maintaining the system may eventually outweigh the cost of replacing both the software and hardware unless some form of emulation or backward compatibility allows the software to run on new hardware.

Using the RUP to evolve a legacy system
A legacy system has been defined as a system that "...significantly resists modification and evolution to meet new and constantly changing business requirements."1 It is usually implied that the system is large and old.
If the legacy system is a mission-critical system that has become extremely hard to evolve, that cannot scale up, and that relies on obsolete hardware or software technologies, then you may have to redevelop it.
Having to deal with a legacy system is usually considered a negative, but the existence of a "precedent" system to establish a point of comparison and use as a source of information is, in fact, very valuable.

Boost the Value of Legacy Data When Designing a New System
The data associated with a legacy system is referred to as legacy data.
A legacy system is any electronic file, database, or software asset (such as a business application or web service) that is deployed and in production.
For example, the system design might prevent a user from entering an invalid value, or it might not save the data to the database if invalid information is detected.

Associative Database Management Systems (ADBMS): Legacy System Transformation
If a COTS system must meet both the depth and breadth of an organization's IT needs, it will likely have to be installed and interfaced with many other COTS software packages.
To avoid causing problems in the installed system, anyone who performs future upgrades, enhancements or maintenance on an adapted COTS system must understand all these features and options and the sometimes-bizarre manner in which they are deployed.
The conventional wisdom for transforming legacy systems is to use relational COTS software--either one-size-fits-all versions or a mosaic of two or more relational COTS applications.

Debate on legacy modernization can be traced more than a decade, when reengineering experts argued whether it was best to migrate a large, mission-critical information system piecemeal or all at once.
Another option is replacing an older information system with modern, packaged software and hardware from any one of a variety of ERP vendors, including Lawson Software, Manugistics, PeopleSoft, Oracle, and SAP.
