Library (computer science) - definition of Library (computer science) in Encyclopedia
In computer science, a library is a collection of subprograms used to develop software.
Libraries are distinguished from executables in that they are not independent programs; rather, they are "helper" code that provides services to some other independent program.
At the same time another common area for development was the idea of multi-tier programs, in which a "display" running on a desktop computer would use the services of a mainframe or minicomputer for data storage or processing.
