 Target Lists
This list is supplied as representative of the types of deep sky objects not included in the NGC.
Along with the target list is a text listing of the objects.
Keep in mind this list was developed some time ago so some of the position information may be suspect.

Several Finest NGC objects can be observed in even smaller instruments so these could be used to get started on the brighter objects.
They feature all of the important data about each Finest NGC object and a generous area for making notes and drawings.
The list features many fine deep sky treasures as well as a few somewhat more challenging objects.

 Messier 102
Pierre Méchain's description matches with NGC 5866, and Charles Messier's handwritten position in his personal copy of the Catalog is almost exactly 5 degrees off NGC 5866 (presumably a data reduction error).
Therefore, in the opinion of the present author, it appears probable that Charles Messier has observed NGC 5866 when he measured the position of M102 (which he could probably locate without much difficulty because of Méchain's acurate description), but due to some reductional error, plotted it exactly 5 degrees west (preceding) of its correct position.
First of all, both Méchain and Messier were very careful observers, indicated by the fact that M102 is the only possible "non-object" left in the catalog, and only for 3 further objects there were positional errors.

 Challenging Summer Deep-Sky Objects
I intend to add links for each object on this list to images and to the appropriate DSS photo, chart numbers for the Harald-Bobroff atlas (that being what I have; if someone else wants to send me Uranometria pages I'll gladly include them as well) and magnitudes, and other information, as as I get time.
It's not clear what size telescope the original authors had in mind; probably something in the 10-14" class, but many of these objects should be easily visible to a practiced observer using a 6" or smaller telescope.
Don't worry if some of the "hard" objects seem easier than the "easy" objects.
