Planetary nebula - definition of Planetary nebula in Encyclopedia
In recent years, Hubble Space Telescope images have revealed many planetary nebulae to have extremely complex and varied morphologies.
The Hubble Space Telescope also showed that while many nebulae appear to have simple and regular structures from the ground, the very high optical resolution achievable by a telescope above the Earth's atmosphere reveals extremely complex morphologies.
Even the spherical ones can be amazingly complex.

 Planetary Nebulae
M2-9 is a striking example of a "butterfly" or a bipolar planetary nebula.
Despite its class, planetary nebula, the Dumbbell Nebula has nothing to do with planets.
The CCD camera has 2048 x 2048 pix, each covering 24 x 24 µm and the sky fields shown measure 6.8 x 6.8 arcmin and 3.5 x 3.9 arcmin, respectively.

 PLANETARY NEBULAE
Planetary Nebulae are interesting objects for the deep-sky observer, offering a differing and challenging object for the study by the novice or advanced observer.
He is also interested in the historical understanding of these objects and has a special interest in "butterfly-like" bipolar planetaries.
Such objects would be more akin to the nova phenomena, or perhaps as a close binary systems.

Proper Motions and Distances of Quasars
The average of the distances of these 125 planetary nuclei is 3.1 kpc, and the average of the apparent magnitudes of 85 planetary nuclei in this category for which data are available (Perek and Kohoutek, 1967) is 15.0.
We list these 30 quasars in Table 1 together with their coordinate names, galactic coordinates, estimated photographic magnitude (mpg values are from Luyten, 1969), the absolute proper motion and the mean error present in its determination were obtained as follows,
There are large uncertainties in the proper motions of quasars listed in table 1.

Precise Positions for the NGC/IC Planetary Nebulae
One such set of objects needing improved positions is the class of planetary nebulae.
Despite publication in 1990 of the "Strasbourg-ESO Catalogue of Planetary Nebulae", many of the objects there are given with either imprecise or simply incorrect coordinates.
The GSC position clearly refers to the centroid of the nebula, but also obviously matches that of the central star within an arcsecond.

 The SkyGX Project
A revised version of this catalogue was rapidly produced and released in cooperation with Francois Ochsenbein at the CDS as a direct result of the work being done with Nina's data on this project.
Painstaking research into the positions, dimensions and nomenclature of all catalogued nebulae have lead to an unparalleled compendium of these tenuous objects.
Much of the 'C' code used in his widely acclaimed Guide software—code which is freely available from his website—has been ported to the native languages of the atlas' software tools.
