Guidelines for Purchasing a Site License at MIT
IS makes some of this software available to the MIT community at no charge and other software available at a discount, through network distribution, the Athena Computing Environment, the MIT Computer Connection, and IS Software Libraries.
Team members ensure that the terms of the agreement match the terms agreed upon by you and the vendor, and that they are consistent with the MIT environment, your intended use of the software, and Institute policy.
You're a systems administrator who has paid $1000 apiece for licenses to run a sophisticated CAD package on five computers in your lab.

Various Licenses and Comments about Them - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation (FSF)
It is sometimes ambiguously referred to as the MIT License.
It is not in use yet to our knowledge; this license is being considered for use in Perl 6 as part of a disjunctive dual licensing scheme.
There is no way we could list all the known non-free software licenses here; after all, every proprietary software company has its own.

 FAQ: Licensing - Mono
The licensing scheme is planned to allow proprietary developers to write applications with Mono.
We will have to evaluate the licenses for compatibility first, but as a general rule, we will accept the code under the same terms of the "container" module.
This definition was fine before object oriented frameworks existed, but with the introduction of object oriented frameworks, different people disagree whether some code that uses object-oriented inheritance is an instance of a "derived work".

 Bambooweb: GNU Free License
The main difference between the GPL and the LGPL is that the latter can be linked to a non-(L)GPLed program, which may be free software or proprietary.
This is useful if you want to create a version of the code that proprietary software companies cannot use in non-free software products.
One feature of the LGPL is that you can convert any LGPLed piece of software into a GPLed piece of software (section 3 of the license).

 NodeWorks - Encyclopedia: MIT License
The MIT License, originated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is a license for the use of certain types of computer software.
Many groups use the MIT license for their own software, such as expat, MetaKit, and (most famously) the X Window System (X11).
It allows reuse for open source or proprietary software.

 Adams Template
ADAMS 11 is available for general use on almost all the machines in the Mechanical Engineering "MechEng" academic computing domain (the exception being the computers in the Undergraduate Control Systems Laboratory).
Note that this has not been installed on a Windows XP machine, so currently this is unsupported if you have any problems.
In all such cases the problem was that the networking on that computer was not set up as described under PREPARING FOR INSTALLATION above.

Free / Open Source Research Community (Online Papers)
We find that the less restrictive the licensing terms the larger the likelihood of reaching an advanced development status and that this effect is even stronger for newer projects.
In this paper we use data from SourceForge.net, the largest open source projects repository, to estimate the main determinants of the progress in the development of a stable and mature code of a software.
This paper concludes that open source activity appears to be generating four economic effects, whose net effect on innovation in the software market is ambiguous.

Quick Reference For Choosing a Free Software License
Suppose you publish your code under License X, and then another person writes a patch that fixes bugs and adds features, and sends you the patch, and you add the patch to your own source tree and publish a new version.
It is a useful reference even if you do not share the FSF's values with respect to source licenses.
For example, if I give you permission to make copies of a book that I wrote, but only if you stand on your head while doing so, this does not mean that I must stand on my head whenever I make copies of my book.

Make Your Open Source Software GPL-Compatible. Or Else.
Branden Robinson performed a detailed XFree86 license analysis (available from the mailing lists of XFree86 and The Open Group; a shorter version was posted by Debian).
In this detailed analysis, he pleaded that XFree86 repair the few licensing problems currently in the code base and keep the program GPL-compatible, saying, “The path to clearing away GPL-incompatibilties due to the BSD advertising clause for the entire XFree86 source tree (as of XFree86 4.3.0, anyway) seems fairly short.
Since the XFree86 folks wouldn’t switch to a GPL-compatible license, the X.Org Foundation (formed January 2004) announced its own version of X on April 6, 2004.

 Licensing
The MIT License (also known as the "X License") is used for all technical material, include program source code, manual pages, and similar material.
The project therefore requires source code and other purely technical material to use the MIT License, but gives authors of interpretive material the option to use the project's variation on the Open Publication license for their work instead.
