Secret Weapons of Commodore: The Story of Commodore
Chief amongst them was Amiga and Commodore developer Jens Schoenfeld, who with his company Individual Computers, signed Ellsworth up to design a larger-scale project: a computer that could reconfigure itself using FPGA technology to become not just a new Commodore 64, but potentially any computer if sufficiently programmed.
Atari wanted the technology behind the Lorraine, but was in no way interested in the computer itself or the company.
Suing Commodore (and Jay Miner personally) for breach of contract on 13 August 1984 stating that the original $500,000 advance was for an exclusive license to the Amiga technology, Tramiel sought to ensure the Amiga technology would only appear in Atari computers.

Computer history : commodore, tandy, atari
Commodore kept calling it the “Vic” in the USA but called it the “VC” computer in Germany and pretended “VC” stood for “Volks Computer”.
Commodore hastily changed the name to “Vic” and ran TV ads for the “Vic” computer; but that got Commodore into even worse trouble, since “Vic” sounds like the German word “Ficke”, which means “fuck”.
Commodore was bought by Escom, which sold Amiga Technologies to Visual Information Services Corp. (Viscorp), which sold it to Gateway, which eventually abandoned the technology.

 MayhemUK Commodore 64 archive
In January 1981, a handful of semiconductor engineers at MOS Technology in West Chester, Pa., a subsidiary of Commodore International Ltd, began designing a graphics chip and a sound chip to sell to whomever wanted to make "the world's best video game".
The MOS designers freely borrowed ideas that they liked - sprites from the TI machine, collision-detection techniques and character-mapped graphics from the Intellivision, and a bit-map from their own VIC20.
(By contrast, the custom chip for Atari's Video Computer System, fabricated 4 years earlier, was built with 6-micrometer technology.) Commodore's video chip was designed with 5-micrometer features.

NodeWorks - Encyclopedia: 2D computer graphics
In those applications, the two-dimensional image is not just a representation of a real-world object, but an independent artifact with added semantic value; two-dimensional models are therefore preferred, because they give more direct control of the image than 3D computer graphics (whose approach is more akin to photography than to typography).
2D computer graphics are mainly used in applications that were originally developed upon traditional printing and drawing technologies, such as typography, cartography, technical drafting, advertising, etc..
The word may stand for the branch of computer science that comprises such techniques, or for the models themselves.

 The Commodore 64
In 1978, MOS Technology developed a chip that allowed a computer to use a color monitor or color TV instead of the monochrome display.
For this reason, Steve Wozniak designed the Apple computer using a 6502 chip, a decision that was to make this one of the most popular 8-byte CPU's.
Within MOS Technology, Chuck Peddle, the chip's designer, built a single-board computer called the KIM-1.

The Vic 20 was based on the MOS Technology 6502 processor, the same processor used in many other home computers of the day, such as the Apple II and the Atari 800.
The Vic 20 also used the same type of joystick controller used on the Atari home computer line and the Atari 2600.
I had my first computer programming experiences on the Vic.

What's described in one short sentence is a giant leap in computer technology: The hardware can be altered by the user without even opening the computer.
These chips can be programmed to do the tasks that the chips of the C-64 or other computers have done.
Most thought the problem was caused by defects in the video chip but in fact the problem was voltage spikes caused by a series of 64 systems that adversely affected the ROM chip.

Once Chuck Peddle had taken over engineering at Commodore, he convinced Jack Tramiel that calculators were already a dead-end, and that they should turn their attention to home computer s.
From that date forward ( 1977), Commodore would be a computer company.
They also failed to expand the technological edge they had, instead trying to bring technologies to market that would not see demand for another couple of years – like digital TV ( CDTV) and a 32-bit CD-ROM based game console ( CD32).

 Interview, Michael Tomczyk
The VIC was introduced at Seibu Department Store in Japan at a small computer show.
The name VIC comes from "video Interface Chip" which made the computer possible.
I picked "20" and when Jack asked, "Why 20?" I replied, "because it's a friendly number and this has to be a friendly computer." He agreed.

Today, where computers are just built for profit (except for Apple, Sun or SGI, just to mention some of the last pioneers in technology), new technologies are often held back because of their cost.
The C65 was cancelled, however, when Commodore bought Amiga Inc., an ingenius decision - the Amiga was a masterpiece and waypointing in technology, especially multimedia.
It was first presented to public at the West Coast Computer Faire, 1977 (where Apple also introduced the waypointing

 Commodore VIC-20 computer
This chip was designed by Commodore two years prior for video game machines, never intending it for use in their own computer system.
Before the floppy drive was released in 1982, games and programs were available only on cassette tapes and cartridges.
The price of a VIC-20 eventually dropped to less than $100, the first color computer to do so.

 Interview, Bill Seiler
The VIC chip was a finished working graphics chip designed by Al and friends at MOS Technology.
I had some of these VIC chips for some time and decided we could do a low cost computer based on it.
At that time the Sinclair Z80 computer was selling like crazy for less than $100.

In the mid 1970s, Jack Tramiel's Commodore Business Machines bought a company called MOS Technology, which designed semiconductors.
This chip found its purpose for Commodore originally on a computer called the KIM-1, which consisted of a single motherboard, display and keyboard.
This form factor would eventually become instantly identifiable as Commodore's signature design for many of its home computers in the 80s.

 Vintage Computer Festival
While the computers demonstrated at the show were functional, there were, among other issues, minor design glitches with the SID and VIC II chips.
The amazing thing was that we did something like 6 new ICs just for this in 9 months and they all had enough functionality in the first couple of passes to make a functioning computer.
This computer is Serial #19 and contains a Revision 6 motherboard built just after Commodore debuted the 64 at the January 1982 Winter Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

VIC meant Video Interface Computer after the Video Interface Chip which was designed by a Commodore MOS Technology subsidiary.
Commodore carried coals to Newcastle by introducing the VIC computer to Japan first.
Floppy disk drives were also available, plus a number of programs were storaged in their own ROM sealed in a cartridge which plugged directly into the back of the keyboard/CPU unit.

 Vic Information
"VIC" sometimes also colloquialismcolloquially refers to the VIC-20 computer itself, or to the VIC chip's successor, MOS Technology VIC-IIVIC-II, used in the Commodore 64 and Commodore 128128.
VIC (all caps) denotes the MOS Technology MOS Technology VICVideo Interface Chip used in the Commodore VIC-20 home computer.

For relevant examples of well-featured sprite-handling chips of the 8-bit home computer / video game era, see the articles on the MOS Technology VIC-II and the Atari ANTIC.
However, Commodore, the main user of MOS chips and the owner of MOS for most of the chip maker's lifetime, applied the common term "sprite".
Even if this not sufficient, today's graphics hardware is often so flexible that it can assist the CPU in drawing/moving sprites without having specialized support for this task.

The operating system is built into the hardware of the computer, and the user interface is BASIC 2.0, a programming language Commodore purchased from Microsoft in the late 1970s.
The joystick port and game cartridge port are prominent features, as Commodore meant to market the VIC-20 as a game console/computer hybrid.
The VIC featured 5 kilobytes of memory, and color graphics at a time when that was very uncommon, though it's display is only capable of 22 characters per line.

One of the reasons I was hired was my knowledge of music synthesis was deemed valuable for future MOS/Commodore products.
BOB YANNES : Actually, I was an electronic music hobbyist before I started working for MOS Technology (one of Commodore's chip divisions at the time) and before I knew anything at all about VLSI chip design.
My intention in designing the chip (since MOS Technology was a merchant semiconductor house at the time and sold chips to the outside world) was to be able to sell the SID chip to synthesizer manufacturers.
