 Overview of the MPEG-4 Standard
This is a departure from MPEG’s past approach of utilizing pseudo C. This language is an extension of C++, and is used to describe the syntactic representation of objects and the overall media object class definitions and scene description information in an integrated way.
Membership goes beyond the MPEG constituency, partly because some of the smaller companies cannot comply to the requirements for participation in MPEG (which vary from one country to another) and also because some companies just don't need to be involved in the development phase.
MPEG is currently working on a number of extensions to Version 2.

 MPEG-4 Reference Hardware Description
The first is to develop a generically optimized reference software version of the standard (MPEG-4 Part 7).
The second is to derive from such versions mixed SW/HW descriptions for which some parts of the reference software are described by alternative blocks described in an HDL form (MPEG-4 Part 9).
The concept of such platform and the relation with MPEG-4 Part 7 is illustrated in REF _Ref111644591 \h Figure 1.

Chapter 14 presents the concept of reference software in MPEG-4 and elaborates on the software architecture of the MPEG-4 Systems player, included in Part 5 of the MPEG-4 standard.
Chapter 4 is dedicated to the MPEG-4 scene description format, a major innovation, supporting MPEG-4's object-based data representation model.
In this environment, the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is playing an important role, thanks to the standards it has been developing.

Although the segmentation process itself is not a subject of MPEG standardization, providing mechanisms to efficiently access such temporal or spatial segments is within the scope of MPEG-4.
In addition to accessing these segments based on more traditional methods (e.g., fast forward to a particular temporal segment), it is also desirable to be able to access (query or browse) these segments based on textual and numeric attributes associated with it.

What I find is actually an issue that hurts Microsoft is that WMP and IE have become destabilized by including them as part of the operating system.
