Master boot record - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Because the MBR is read almost immediately when the computer is started, many computer viruses made in the era before virus scanner software became widespread operated by changing the code within the MBR.
In the IBM PC architecture the Master Boot Record (MBR), or partition sector, is the 512-byte boot sector, i.e.
In both cases the BIOS init transfers control to the first sector of the disk after reading it into memory.

 MBR - Master Boot Record
MBR viruses normally enter a system through a floppy disk that is installed in the floppy drive when the computer is started up.
Short for Master Boot Record, a small program that is executed when a computer boots up.
Since the MBR executes every time a computer is started, this type of virus is extremely dangerous.

The Master Boot Record (MBR) and What it Does
In order to understand the Master Boot Record and the Master Boot Code buried within it, it might be helpful to understand the sequence of events that occur when your computer starts.
If a Master Boot Record is found, it is read into memory at location 0000:7c00 and INT 19 jumps to memory location 0000:7c00 the same as was the case with the floppy.
Once the boot sector is found and its contents or data verified, the BIOS starts the process of booting the operating system by using the information in the boot sector.

 Master Boot Record - MBR
Short for Master Boot Record, MBR is also sometimes referred to as the "master boot block" and is the first sector of the computer hard disk drive used to determine from which partition a computer will boot.
The master boot record is located on the first sector of the hard drive; it's the first program the computer runs after performing a memory check and looking for a bootable disk (if set in CMOS).
The MBR tells the computer where to find and how to load the operating system.

When the computer is booted from the hard disk, the virus is executed first, and the hard disk can thereafter be used normally.
The hard disk is inaccesible after a diskette boot, since the operating system cannot find valid partition data in the Master Boot Record - attempts to use the hard disk result in the DOS error message "Invalid drive specification".
The virus is not, therefore, easily noticeable, unless the computer is booted from a diskette.

This implies that, if the hard disk is the first one, the first bytes of the master boot record have to be instructions.
Notice that the BIOS itself has no idea of what a partition is, it only loads the first sector of the disk into memory and executes it.
Its initial value is 7C00h, so that it points to the boot code.

For the DOS 3.30 MBR, these were all replaced by 00 bytes which were moved to the end of each string.
When the MBR code for DOS 3.30 was released, the 'F3' byte that you see above (at location 7C16) was changed to an 'F2' for some odd reason; remaining that way until it was finally changed back to an 'F3' for Microsoft's FAT32 MBR.
Since use of the 'F2' machine code byte for carrying out this instruction is at best 'undocumented' [see here for all the details], I have to wonder if changing this was an error in some Assembler or something that the programmer(s) actually intended to do.

The Master Boot Record (MBR) is the information in the first sector of any hard disk or diskette that identifies how and where an operating system is located so that it can be boot (loaded) into the computer's main storage or random access memory.
In turn, that record contains a program that loads the rest of the operating system into RAM.
In addition to this table, the MBR also includes a program that reads the boot sector record of the partition containing the operating system to be booted into RAM.
