Topic: Memory

Memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A basic and generally accepted classification of memory is based on the duration of memory retention, and identifies three distinct types of memory: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
In contrast, procedural memory (or implicit memory) is not based on the conscious recall of information, but on implicit learning.
Procedural memory is primarily employed in learning motor skills and should be considered a subset of implicit memory.

Random access memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Core memory, which used wires attached to small ferrite electromagnetic cores, also had roughly equal access time (the term “core” is still used by some programmers to describe the RAM main memory of a computer).
Generally, RAM in a computer is considered main memory (or primary storage): the working area used for displaying and manipulating data.
Technically, RAM devices are not limited to memory chips, and random-access memory as a storage format is not limited to use as working memory.

 Computer Memory Information
Memory is a necessity for any computer and it is recommend that you have at least 64MB of memory for your IBM or Macintosh.
There are two types of memory; the first type of memory is the memory explained in the above paragraph, this memory is available in computer chips; the other type of memory is actually Hard Drive Space which is stored on the computer Hard Disk Drive.
With some types of memory, the last one or two digits may be changed to indicate different kinds of memory; there are 1MB chips that end with 4256, 4257, and 4258.

 Memory
The internal plasticity of memory which ‘distributed’ models suggest is one of the most curious and characteristic features of human memory, and one which clearly differentiates our cognitive systems from the ‘memories’ of current digital computers.
Some models of human memory developed in classical Artificial Intelligence research employ local representations of this sort, relying on an analogy with the random-access storage systems of digital computers.
This has been the dominant view of memory in modern philosophy of mind, and it is assumed in much work on memory in cognitive science.

What is memory? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
The term memory identifies data storage that comes in the form of chips, and the word storage is used for memory that exists on tapes or disks.
Moreover, the term memory is usually used as a shorthand for physical memory, which refers to the actual chips capable of holding data.
ROM (read-only memory): Computers almost always contain a small amount of read-only memory that holds instructions for starting up the computer.

 Memory
A decent analogy is to the working memory or RAM of a computer.
Long term memory is a little like the hard drive on your computer.
We often think of memory as involving storing stuff in the brain or mind, but that's just a metaphor.

What is main memory? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
Refers to physical memory that is internal to the computer.
Because computers often have too little main memory to hold all the data they need, computer engineers invented a technique called swapping, in which portions of data are copied into main memory as they are needed.
The amount of main memory on a computer is crucial because it determines how many programs can be executed at one time and how much data can be readily available to a program.

 Memory in Psychology
We review the idea of working memory as a short duration system in which small amounts of information are simultaneously stored and manipulated in the service of a task and that syntactic processing in sentence comprehension requires such a storage and computational system.
Sensory information storage and short-term memory are beset by severe limitations of capacity, while long-term memory, for all practical purposes, has a virtually infinite capacity.
The Matrix Model of Memory was developed by Humphreys, Bain and Pike (1989) and Pike (1984) to provide a coherent theoretical account of a range of different memory tasks, including episodic tasks, such as recognition and recall, and semantic tasks, such as familiarity rating and indirect production tasks.

 TIP: Concepts
The idea that memory is always an active reconstruction of existing knowledge was championed by Bruner and is found in the theories of Ausubel and Schank.
Futhermore, memory has served as a battleground for opposing theories and paradigms of learning (e.g., Adams, 1967; Ashcraft, 1989; Bartlett, 1932; Klatzky, 1980; Loftus and Loftus, 1976; Tulving and Donaldson, 1972).
Many theories of instruction do not make assumptions about the nature of memory but do specify how information should be organized for optimal learning.

 memory
For those who posit that memory is a brain function, there is not only a direction for research to follow, but hope of success for discovering something truly useful.
Piaget later wrote that "I therefore must have heard, as a child, the account of this story...and projected it into the past in the form of a visual memory, which was a memory of a memory, but false" (Tavris 1993).

 Memory
One possibility is that the stored memory remains unchanged — ready to be recalled again and again as needed (rather like a stored computer file that is copied into RAM as needed).
Explicit memory is also acquired in a short-term process followed by a long-term process.
There is some evidence that the very act of recalling a stored memory erases it from storage and to preserve it, it must be stored anew (rather as if a "SAVE" of an unchanged computer file actually replaced the original just as a "SAVE AS" with the same name does).
