Topic: Metadata

Metadata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Structural metadata is used to describe the stucture of computer systems such as tables, columns and indexes.
Fundamentally, then, metadata are "the data that describe the structure and workings of an organization’s use of information, and which describe the systems it uses to manage that information." To do a model of metadata is to do an "Enterprise model" of the information technology industry itself.
However, it is difficult if not impossible to precisely distinguish program "metadata" from general aspects of stored-program computing architecture; if the machine reads it and acts upon it, it is a computational instruction, and the prefix "meta" has little significance.

Metadata is simply "data about data." Within the context of the computer industry, the most common domain of metadata is the file system.
The concept of a file's size as "immutable metadata" may be difficult to get your head around, particularly since we're so used to thinking of a file's size as something that is "derived from" the data itself, rather than simply "associated with" the data like the independent metadata described earlier.
To understand why, we'll examine the fundamentals of file metadata (or simply "metadata" henceforth), and explore the past, present, and future of metadata on the Mac, and in the computer industry as a whole.

File metadata is information associated with a file that is not logically part of the file's actual content (i.e., its data), although it may be physically.
File system metadata is file metadata that is stored as part of the file system data structures dedicated to each file.

 DCMI Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
One can assign a metadata value selected from a controlled vocabulary as the value of the element, and then qualify that element with the name or identifier of the scheme from which it is selected (the specifics of the encoding depends on the syntax being employed.
Metadata is descriptive information about an object or resource whether it be physical or electronic.
The basic idea is that qualifiers should improve the precision of a piece of metadata, but the metadata should still be useful even without that extra precision (that is, dropping the qualifier has 'dumbed-down' the metadata).

 ongoing · On Search: Metadata
Of course, if we could use computers to compute the metadata like Google does, that would be immensely cheaper than having employees do it.
Automatic Metadata · Obviously, there are some metadata items the computer will give you for free: a filename, created/modified dates, who created it, what kind of file (HTML, Excel, PowerPoint), how big it is. These can be handy for search applications and since they’re free, you should collect them and make them available.
When you decide in principle that metadata should be collected, it will develop that many stakeholders have short-lists of the fields they need to make this worthwhile.
