Topic: Metadata (computing)

Metadata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Apple Computer 's current version of its Mac OS X operating system ( Tiger) supports cataloging and searching for file metadata through a feature known as Spotlight.
Unix find utility was an early example, although inefficient when scanning hundreds of thousands of files on a modern computer system.
Most executable file formats include metadata describing issues that need to be considered by the runtime or operating system when executing the program.

 Information Based Computing
These collaboratories will be the user interface to the underlying databases and compute engines.
The result is a semantically enabled distributed computation system that supports information discovery from within applications and that is scalable to analysis of petabytes of data.
The National Biomedical Computation Resource (NBCR), the National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research (NCMIR) at UCSD and the NSF sponsored Collaboratory for Digital Microscopy involving NCMIR, SDSC and Cornell University are involved in multidimensional neuroscience research and technology development at many levels of biological complexity.

 RIB - Globus Integration Project
Grid-based computing promises all of this and more.
Metadata about software also needs to be stored.
Although RIB is capable of storing metadata conforming to an arbitrary data model, it's primary use is storage and cataloging of software metadata.

 Semantics and Computing
The idea with a metadata-ritch environment is that it allows you to be more expressive to the computer.
Ideally, the computer would collect and automatically attach as much metadata as possible to files as they are created and used.
Filename extensions are useful for humans, but the computer should not need them.

Metadata, The Mac, and You - Page 10 - (08/2001)
Metadata support is one of the most stubbornly entrenched software technologies.
The future of metadata in the computer industry is clear: more accurate, and more of it.
Today, file type metadata is commonly represented by MIME types during network file transfers where the source and destination platforms may have different native storage mechanisms for file type metadata.

 Interfaces to Scientific Data Archives
The large data objects and computational requirements for most analysis calculations in a molecular dynamics database combined with inherent parallelism of the algorithms employed suggest the use of parallel computers and (wide area) distributed computing environments to provide sufficient performance.
Another effect of the changes in computing technology is that the nature of scientific data is changing.
We are seeing a reversal of the conventional relationship between computer and storage: the storage system is becoming the manager and the compute process the slave.

University of Trento - Italy - UNITN-Eprints - Deriving Ontology-Based Metadata for E-Learning form the ACM Computing ...
Q Science : QA Mathematics : QA075 Electronic computers.
In this paper, we claim that an ontology for Computer Science can be extracted as a side-result from the work made by an ACM committee on Computer Science curricula.
We extracted the ontology, and we suggest that it could/should be used for defining metadata on e-learning material that is concerned with the Computer Science domain.

Metadata Standards for the Internet In May 1993 I started to build the Internet Parallel Computing Archive(1) at the HENSA Unix Archive(2).
The requirements for URC also include that it must be parsable by a computer, be simple and structured for nesting.
In the best of all worlds, each WWW site would create the metadata for each of the files it wants to make available to the world and the results would be distributed automatically using a hierarchy of caches (for efficiency).

Abstract: Computational Grids are emerging as a new paradigm for sharing and aggregation of geographically distributed resources for solving large scale compute and data intensive problems in science, engineering and commerce.
Abstract: High-performance computing clusters (commodity hardware with low-latency, high-bandwidth interconnects) based on Linux are rapidly becoming the dominant computing platform for a wide range of scientific disciplines.

Any legacy files stored in WinFS are a monitored and their internal metadata is extracted and synchronized with the DB by WinFS.
All this is not a surprise for us, as the people who were behind the same realization on BeOS --Dominic Giampaolo and Pavel Cisler-- today work at key positions at Apple Computer in the file system and Finder areas respectively.
MacOS's have been indexed from a long time now, this just changes the way they are indexing it and adds metadata support.

The directory in which the document is stored can have a metadata.inf file containing metadata and this can be inserted into the document by a Save function operating from the HEFCE global addin.
A better approach is to gather as much metadata as possible automatically without user interaction.
These are stored internally within the document file in a special format called OLE structured storage.
