 NodeWorks - Encyclopedia: Microsoft AntiSpyware
Microsoft AntiSpyware, also known as Windows AntiSpyware, is a piece of software designed to remove, quarantine or prevent a spyware presence on Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 operating systems.
Microsoft will also release a similar utility for anti-virus purposes after acquiring security software firm GeCAD Software in 2003, which will probably be released in its next version of Windows currently in beta phase and code named "Longhorn" and is scheduled for release in first quarter 2006.
Recently, at the RSA conference, Chief Software Architect and founder of Microsoft Bill Gates announced that Microsoft Antispyware will be made available free of charge to all validly licensed Windows XP and Windows 2003 users to help secure Windows users world-wide against this ever growing threat within the computer industry.

 Spyware solutions: Technology and leadership
The Microsoft anti-spyware vision is that PC users should be able to see and understand the software that is running on their PCs and have the power to prevent or remove software they do not want.
Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software.
Microsoft's approach to software is distinguished by its vision of an open and extensible platform.

 Temptations Forums > Microsoft AntiSpyware,
Microsoft AntiSpyware is AntiSpyware software that helps to detect and remove spyware and other potentially unwanted software from your computer.
Windows AntiSpyware, built using technology from Microsoft's acquisition of Giant Company Software, is designed to protect Windows PCs from spyware--software that is installed on computers without their owners' knowledge.
Microsoft AntiSpyware helps protect you from spyware& negative consequences, which can include a slower Internet connection, pop-up advertisements, reduced computer performance, identity theft, and the loss of private information.

Microsoft Antispyware - Printer Friendly version
Microsoft gives a complete answer: "...Spyware is a general term used for software that performs certain behaviors such as advertising, collecting personal information, or changing the configuration of your computer, generally without appropriately obtaining your consent.
Microsoft didn't develop the Antispyware software in-house, but rather followed its age old tactic, "...what you cannot build, buy...", and bought the software called " GIANT AntiSpyware ".
The current beta from Microsoft is free to download, hence the word beta, but when the final version comes, it is expected that there will be some kind of subscription to keep up with the latest updates and use the advanced features.

Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Microsoft Windows Anti-Spyware Preview
In February 2005, Microsoft shipped a second public beta version of Windows AntiSpyware that features "enhanced real-time protection agents, new threat categories, and improved stability and performance." It does not appear to be much different from the previous beta version.
For this reason, Giant AntiSpyware uses logic that is based partially on feedback from Spynet to examine the "genetic fingerprints" of files and determine whether those files are valid.
However, Giant AntiSpyware, unlike some other spyware solutions, presents a pleasant, easily-navigated user interface that is similar, in some ways, to a Microsoft taskpad or activity center.

 First Look: Microsoft AntiSpyware
Once threats are identified, Microsoft AntiSpyware displays detailed information about detected programs including where a threat is located on your computer, a risk rating, and a recommended action to take.
Microsoft has entered the anti-spyware business with the launch of a free beta version of Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Paul Bryan, Microsoft's director of product management for its Security, Business and Technology unit, wouldn't say whether the Microsoft AntiSpyware program would remain free after beta testing ends in July.

 Microsoft Antispyware Review
Microsoft AntiSpyware has a well-designed user interface that is nice to look at, but can be a bit confusing for the novice user.
This is helpful if you have wiped out spyware that is needed by an otherwise useful program (Real Player and Kazaa are typical examples of software embedded with spyware on your PC that won’t run without it).
Expect to have to dig through the Microsoft Knowledge Base for answers to your support questions in the future.

PCWorld.com - Program Attacks Microsoft AntiSpyware App
AntiSpyware is designed to protect Windows users from spyware, or programs that surreptitiously monitor computer users' actions, and other malicious programs.
One month after Microsoft released a beta version of its new anti-spyware software, security researchers at Sophos say they have detected the first malware program that seeks to attack it.
Although the researchers have only seen a handful of incidents of the program "in the wild"--out on the Internet--the speed in which hackers targeted Microsoft's AntiSpyware software is concerning, Cluley says.

PCWorld.com - Microsoft Readies Antispyware App
Microsoft would not comment on information published on Microsoft enthusiast Web site Neowin.net that a beta version of the software, code-named Atlanta, has already been distributed to internal testers.
When it purchased Giant, Microsoft said that the beta would run on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems and that the company would use the public beta release to collect and evaluate customer feedback on the product, and to make decisions about future distribution of the antispyware product.
The Redmond, Washington, software maker will release a free evaluation version of Giant AntiSpyware, though a spokesperson declined to identify an exact release date, or to discuss the functionality to be included in the release program.

 jkOnTheRun: Microsoft AntiSpyware beta available
Microsoft has released a beta version of their new AntiSpyware software and it is available for download at this link.
The first thing I did after installing the MS AntiSpyware program was have the software do a quick scan of my system which took about 5 minutes.
I installed AntiSpyware this morning and had a surprise waiting for me. I run a protected system with Antivirus software and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware program and keep them updated religiously so they always catch the latest spyware/ malware.

 Microsoft AntiSpyware: Separated at Birth
You probably know that a program called Microsoft AntiSpyware is currently being given away by the Redmond company in a public beta program.
Both companies also created a way for users of their two programs to submit suspected adware and spyware to be added to the database of programs that should be caught.
What you may not know is that the program started out being co-developed by another software company — which happens to own the rights to Microsoft's spyware database for the better part of the next three years.

Neowin.net - Where unprofessional journalism looks better - Microsoft Denies its Antispyware Favors Claria
According to a statement published by Microsoft, the downgrade in threat level merely represents an effort to be "fair and consistent with how Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) handles similar software from other vendors." The news comes at a sensitive time, as Microsoft is reportedly in acquisition talks with Claria.
Microsoft should work on producing Operating Systems and Office software that's not full of holes, bugs, loops etc...

Microsoft Antispyware (beta) Preview: Security And Utilities
Upside: Microsoft Antispyware provides two levels of antispyware scans -- a quick, cursory file scan or a deep-level scan that includes a check your RAM memory and running processes -- as well as the option to select individual drives and folders for deep analysis.
The Microsoft Antispyware interface is organised logically and is uncluttered with extraneous detail.
Downside: During the memory portion of the deep scan, Microsoft Antispyware briefly slowed our test system with a 930MHz Pentium III and 386MB running Windows XP SP2 to a crawl.

 Getting started with Microsoft AntiSpyware
Fortunately, thanks to Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware, it's easy to remove this sort of program from your computer; you can download the free from the Microsoft website.
By validating Windows, you become part of the Windows Genuine Advantage program, which means that you'll be able to download additional free software from Microsoft, like Photo Story 3, and you'll be certain that you have a genuine copy of Windows installed on your PC.
That means that it's moved to a secure part of your computer's hard drive, and restricted, so it can't run and cause any problems.

Microsoft has pulled the program from its website until the problem can be corrected.
Elias Weatherbee, a Microsoft representative, said the program was "only in beta" and that "a fix was forthcoming."

 Why Microsoft AntiSpyware Is Untrustworthy
Microsoft, in a statement, said: "[We] decided that adjustments should be made to the classification of Claria software in order to be fair and consistent with how Windows AntiSpyware handles similar software from other vendors."
And yet Microsoft denies it: "All software is reviewed under the same objective criteria, detection policies and analysis process.
, Microsoft's Mike Nash indicated that reclassifications were being done to meet the criteria and that the old classifications reflected errors from Giant Software, from whom Microsoft bought its AntiSpyware software.
