Internet Explorer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Internet Explorer, abbreviated IE or MSIE, is a proprietary web browser made by Microsoft and currently available as part of Microsoft Windows.
The new version of Internet Explorer is intended to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software, and will include important bug fixes and some enhancements to better support the web standards.
Microsoft has shipped Internet Explorer as the default browser in all versions of Microsoft Windows since Windows 95 OSR1.

Microsoft Internet Explorer - definition of Microsoft Internet Explorer in Encyclopedia
Microsoft asserted in court that IE was integrated with Windows 98, and that Windows 98 could not be made to operate without it.
Microsoft has held that this is not meaningful; that "IE" is no longer (as it was prior to Windows 98) a separate piece of software, but simply a brand name for the Web-browsing and HTML-displaying capacities of the Windows operating system.
It is possible to remove Internet Explorer from Windows 95, 98 and ME (see instructions on the Netscape website [30] (http://wp.netscape.com/browsers/using/ieusers/start/removing.html) and on Microsoft's website [31] (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q192852)), as well as from Windows 2000 (http://www.vorck.com/remove-ie.html) and Windows XP (http://nuhi.msfn.org/nlite.html) at installation time.

An update rollup is available for Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted.
To correctly remove more than one cumulative update for Internet Explorer on a computer that is running Windows XP 64-Bit Edition, Version 2003, you must remove the updates in the same order that you installed them.
For example, if the content type that is returned by the server is "text/xml; charset=utf-8," Internet Explorer may not be able to locate the program that is used to open the file.

MIME Type Detection in Internet Explorer (Internet Explorer - URL Monikers)
Note In Internet Explorer 6 for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) type "text/plain" is not ambiguous, and is never rendered as HTML in the restricted zone, even if the content suggests that this is the correct format.
Internet Explorer in Windows XP SP2 handles MIME types differently than previous versions.
If no positive match is obtained during the data scan, and if the server-provided MIME type is known, an attempt is made to determine if the format (text or binary) of the known MIME type conflicts with the format (text or binary) that was determined from scanning the buffer.

Microsoft Internet Explorer and other web browsers
They succeeded so well that Microsoft has since announced they won't bother developing new versions of IE for the Mac OS anymore.
It was initially launched with the blessings and financial support of AOL/Netscape, who used it as the basis for the last few versions of the Netscape browser (which is still available but won't be updated, since the availability of Mozilla direct from the developers makes a Netscape-brand browser redundant.).
There will be no IE7 for current versions of Windows (not even XP); it will be available only to people who buy the next version of Windows (expected in 2006 or later, and which won't run well on most current PCs).

About the DHTML Object Model (Internet Explorer - DHTML)
Event handling is not unique to Internet Explorer 4.0 or even Internet Explorer 3.0; Netscape Navigator 3.x and Communicator also handle events.
This particular piece of code is generally known as an event handler, because that's what it does, it handles events.
The advantages to this are that authors will be able to create interactive Web sites with fewer pages, and users do not have to wait for new pages to download from Web servers, increasing the speed of their browsing and the performance of the Internet as a whole.
