MkLinux, as you probably realize, is Apple Computer's Mach 3-based version of the GNU/Linux operating system.
In addition, MkLinux file systems are byte- order compatible with other (e.g., Intel-based) Linux file systems.
The other is a MkLinux program that is available to you when the MkLinux installer is running.

 Why MkLinux?
MkLinux has never been a large-scale project for Apple Computer.
After all, MkLinux is basically a free version of unix.
Much of the remaining freeware in the MkLinux distribution is covered by "University-style" licenses, such as those used by CMU, MIT, and UC Berkeley.

MkLinux - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
MkLinux is an Open Source Software project, initiated by OSF Research Institute and Apple Computer, in order to port Linux to the PowerPC platform.
MkLinux is short for "Microkernel Linux," referring to the project's adaptation of the Linux kernel to run as a server hosted atop the Mach Microkernel.
MkLinux is based on version 3.0 of Mach.

MkLinux Developer Release 2.1: Readme First The MkLinux Developer Releases should each be considered as still a "work in progress".
MkLinux (i.e., gcc for PowerPC) follows the UNIX System V Release 4/PPC philosophy of using unsigned characters.
The MkLinux disklabel utility summarizes disk partition information, but it can only be run by root: disklabel /dev/sda By default, MkLinux uses (standard Linux) EXT2 file systems.

 Basic MkLinux netatalk Setup
For the MkLinux distribution, check ftp://ftp.mklinux.apple.com/pub/FullRelease/ For the netatalk distribution, check ftp://ftp.mklinux.apple.com/pub/FullRelease/Archives/rpm.bin/ In both cases, be sure to read all the README files.
Reorganized section at beginning that says what MkLinux versions will work with netatalk, since Michel Pollet has gotten the bugs out of the 2.0.x server that prevented netatalk from working with it.
Nevertheless, by reading stuff on the Web, together with the manual pages, I was able to piece together enough understanding to get netatalk file and print services running on a small network.

Linux Magazine - August 1999 Feature Story Outside Intel
MkLinux did not run on the latest PCI-based Macintosh computers and the Linux/PPC development was stuntedby Apple's refusal to release hardware specifications for its new machines -- a frustrating experience for Linux/ PPC users and developers.
This developer's release is not intended for general use, but as a "set of common software" to be used by the various distributions.
With the exception of the Debian port, these distributions are all on a par with the latest Intel distributions.

Linux? On the Macintosh? With Mach? Linux Journal
Although MkLinux, Apple Computer's Microkernel Linux for the Power Macintosh, has been under development for a few years, it has been available to the general public for only a short while.
By also porting MkLinux to the Intel platform, Apple opens the door for Intel and Power Macintosh users to try each other's systems, trade software and ideas, and generally enlarge the Linux world.
With the availability of MkLinux, users can benefit from the best of both worlds: using Linux for research and batch data processing and MacOS for graphical applications, desktop publishing, and much more.

History of Linux for the PowerPC
MkLinux development is where it should be, in the hands of the users.
The divide in the LinuxPPC community between LinuxPPC and MkLinux was because many people wanted more hardware information then Apple was willing to release, the latest PCI Macintosh computers were not yet supported by MkLinux and many did not want to run Linux on Mach for one reason or another.
Because of MkLinux, the user community mushroomed, and Linux on the PowerPC started to become mainstream.

 Slashdot MkLinux Not Dead
MkLinux was a great project and I'm sure people learned a lot about Mach and about hosting a Unix environment on top of a microkernel, but when Apple dropped their support in favour of Darwin it became obsolete.
In many ways, MkLinux can be considered a fork off of the orginal code (since it is running on a mach kernel and has many changes).
However, MkLinux was the reason why Linux on the PowerPC became successful, MkLinux created the first real Linux base on the PowerPC platform.

gcc and gdb binaries for MkLinux on PowerMac
A while ago I told Glen on this list that we'd have to make binaries of gcc and gdb available for MkLinux running on PowerMacs ( http://www.mklinux.apple.com/) before it would make sense to archive Swarm binaries for MkLinux.
Anyway, it looks like I was wrong and there's no reason not to archive Swarm binaries for MkLinux.

Richard Kinne is using the MkLinux project to re-acquaint himself with the Unix operating system after having been exiled to VAX/VMS-land for ten years.
Additional packages, all several megabytes in size, are also available for the MACH source code, the Red Hat Package Management (rpm) source packages, the rpm binaries, and the X11 distribution.
Packaged as stuffed MacOS SIT files, the initial MkLinux distribution file, MkLinux_DR1.sit, is 42MB in size.

 TidBITS#407/01-Dec-97
MkLinux duplicates X Windows, a graphical interface which you start by typing the command X11.
Several games are also available, including one called XBill, where you try to stop a familiar-looking man from installing Windows on a bunch of computers.
I installed MkLinux to educate myself about an important OS, and to learn how a true multi-user system with preemptive multitasking and protected memory works.

 using Swarm with MkLinux
Since then, the gcc 2.7.x that is distributed for MkLinux has been updated to compile Objective C correctly on the Power Mac, so you don't need to follow my earlier instructions.
I belive that the version of gdb 4.16 that is distributed with MkLinux doesn't understand Objective C, but there are patches available for gdb 4.16 that may work under MkLinux as well.
Swarm *should* work fine, though, once you have a gcc that works and have installed all of the required packages.

Installing Radiance on MkLinux for Power Macintosh
As long as your MkLinux Unix system configuration remains intact, you don't need to learn a lot of Unix in order to just use Radiance as a power rendering system.
Artifice also provides instructions for installing Radiance on a Power MachTen system, as well as notes on which Unix for Radiance might best fit your needs.
Log in to UNIX using the "root" account, go to the directory containing the downloaded archive file "Radiance3R1P4.tar.Z" (or newer), and use the command "uncompress Radiance3R1P4.tar.Z" to decompress the archive file of the main Radiance distribution.

 199609: MkLinux
By porting MkLinux to the Intel platform, Apple opens the way for both Intel and PowerMac users to try out the new system, trade software, etc. And, should the merits of MkLinux justify a switch, it is not inconceivable that many Linux users would be willing to adopt a different kernel.
This software will be particularly popular with Mac users in higher education as well as the scientific research communities who have asked for our support of Linux.
Most Mach-based systems, including MkLinux, treat the UNIX kernel as a monolithic server process which fields every system call.
