 FreeWebspace.net Community - Messenger Service
The "Messenger" service is normally used for a LAN/Intranet to send messages to a specific computer name/IP and uses NetBIOS to transmit its data between computers.
Windows Messenger is a new rich, integrated real-time communications experience in Windows XP that enables people to effortlessly see, talk, work and play with friends, family and colleagues, whenever and however they choose using their PC.
For example, the Messenger service informs you when a print job is completed or when you lose power to your computer and switch to a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS).
