 ngc
The NGC contained many errors which have for the most part been eliminated by the Revised NGC.
The New General Catalogue (NGC) is the most well-known catalogue of deep sky objects (DSOs) in amateur astronomy.
The NGC was compiled in the 1880s by Dreyer using observations mostly from William Herschel, and then subsequently expanded with two Index Catalogues (ICs), adding nearly 5,000 objects.

 Cosmic Bar Codes
The deep valleys in the spectrum are produced when a blanket of warm (few million degree) gas absorbs X rays of specific energies from hotter gas close to the central black hole.
Astronomers have used optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray telescopes in an effort to disentangle the complex nature of inflowing and outflowing gas at different distances from the black hole in NGC 5548.
The spectrum shows the number of X rays present at each energy or wavelength, and amounts to a cosmic bar code.

The object was found during the Leuschner Observatory Supernova Search (LOSS), which uses an automated 0.76-m telescope equipped with the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory CCD camera.
Inspection of earlier LOSS observations of NGC 7742 reveals the presence of this object since Feb. 15, before it disappeared behind the sun.

NGC 2655 and NGC7743 are two of the brightest Seyfert 2s in our sample in Halpha and NGC 4725 has been detected by ROSAT and in the UV by HST.
We propose to observe with ASCA the low-luminosity Seyfert 2 galaxies NGC 2655, NGC 7742, and NGC 4725 as part of a multiwavelength study of low-luminosity AGN.
Because of their faintness, little is known about the nature of low-luminosity Seyfert galaxies, particularly Seyfert 2 galaxies since the intrinsic continuum can often only be directly observed above 2 keV.
