Linux is the name of a computer operating system and its kernel.
In desktop environments like KDE and GNOME, Linux may be used with a user interface that is comparable to that of Mac OS or Microsoft Windows in addition to other desktop environments and to its traditional Unix-like command line interface.
Linux and other free software projects are frequently criticised for not going far enough in terms of ensuring usability, and the question of Linux's usability compared to Windows or the Macintosh remains hotly debated.

I liken linux hardware configuration today to about the way it used to be with dos 6.2 and windows for workgroups..
Sun's so-called Java Desktop was somewhat underwhelming when I reviewed it, and Sun's on-again, off-again commitment to Linux makes the company an unlikely champion for Linux in the enterprise.
