ʻOkina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A more pedantic and ultra-correct method for plain ASCII text is to use the grave accent character (`), ASCII value 96 in decimal and 60 in hexadecimal, which in some older fonts, especially those used on older Unix-like platforms, does display a glyph similar to a left single quotation mark.
But in some older fonts, especially those used on Unix platforms and related platforms and on an MS-DOS screen it renders as a right single quotation mark (which is the wrong shape).
If ‘okinas in this article appear as straight typewriter quotation marks to you, you may need to enlarge the font display in your browser.

 Resources Frequently Asked Questions
To omit the 'okina and kahako in print or in computer representations of the language is to do the language a great injustice, and we consider this omission of the 'okina and kahako in words where they do exist to be a misspelling of those words.
The Papa Pihi Hawaiʻi for Windows is a customized version of Tavultesoft Keyboard Manager ("Keyman") that makes it easy for users to type the 'okina (glottal) and kahako (macron) that are essential for proper representation of the Hawaiian language on the computer.
Until the past 8 to 10 years there were no tools for properly and easily representing the 'okina and kahako on the computer.

If I wanted to use ‘okina and kahakō in other programs such as MS Excel or Adobe Photoshop, I type my text in MS Word, copy it, then paste it into the other program.
Hawaiian language institutions have discovered what's known as a "hack" to generate both ‘okina and kahakō.
The solution is to select fonts with narrow-spaced ‘okina.

 Representing Hawaiian as Unicode
The difference in numbers between the Mac and Win fonts is inconsequential to your browser when you are using the HI font; the escape sequence is mapped to the correct character by the browser and OS.
The lack of consistent support for Unicode is the reason we have the many different user views for Kualono, using Unicode, custom fonts, and diacritic-stripped versions of all of our pages.
Where most computer fonts contain characters based on the Latin alphabet, as well as numbers, and punctuation marks, Unicode fonts can be quite large and contain thousands of characters.

 About Hawaiian Fonts
The lack of ability to display these characters on the computer severely hampered its usefulness to speakers of 'olelo Hawai'i for many years.
Several fonts sets have appeared over the past six or seven years that have allowed speakers of Hawaiian to use the kahako and 'okina on the computer, however there were several limitiations:
Fonts addressed all of the limitations of the other Hawaiian fonts.

At this time, the kahako cannot be included on Web sites without requiring that the user download special font software.

Only when the shouji was firmly slid shut, and when Okina brought himself into a kneeling position carefully across the three newcomers, did the words start to form.

Aoshi inwardly flinched at the way Okina SPAT out the word Okashira, full of palpable contempt towards Aoshi.

 Hawaiian Language
A simple trick that is taught in most Hawaiian language courses as well as used in various books on Hawaiian language is:
The choice to use Ke versus Ka has to do with the word that immediately follows it.
Missing the 'Okina or Kahakō can greatly change not only the how a word sounds, but also it's basic meaning.

Phonologically speaking, a glottal stop cannot occur in this position because it would violate the phonotactic structure of Hawaiian syllables which are composed of (C)V. The symbol used on the sign is also a single open quote rather than the typographically correct ‘okina.
I have long been puzzled by this sign due to its positioning of the ‘okina after the rather than before it.
The ‘okina in Ko‘olau is an apostrophe with the ball on the top, facing to the left, like the number 9.

Typing Hawaiian Characters in Word XP Without Special Fonts or Keyboards
If you type Hawaiian or another Polynesian language frequently, it would be a good idea to customize your keyboard layout in Word so that these characters are easy to type.
This is where you can assign the keystroke combination you wish to use to generate the ʻokina.
If you work predominantly in the Hawaiian language, you may choose to assign the ʻokina to the apostrophe key itself, and reassign the apostrophe to Alt-apostrophe key.
