 Daemon News
The goal of the OpenDarwin project is to provide a binary compatible development environment for Mac OS X.
The OpenDarwin project is based on the latest sources available from the Darwin project at Apple Computer.
One of the key aspects of the project is to enable interested Mac OS X and Darwin developers to be able to retrieve, modify, build, and distribute operating system changes.

"[...]The mission of the OpenDarwin project is to innovate and explore new technologies while still remaining relevant, through its informal connection to www.opensource.apple.com, to the mainstream computing environments that Apple provides.
OpenDarwin is run independently of Apple so contributors are free to work on anything they deem important, useful or fun ;-).
Membership in the OpenDarwin project and access to its works are open to everyone.

OpenDarwin is an operating system based on Apple's Darwin, but with certain "value added" features.
The OpenDarwin Project is an offshoot from Apple's Darwin initiative.
However, OpenDarwin includes X11 and a wide range of software can be installed using DarwinPorts, including fully fledged desktop environments like KDE and GNOME.

MacGIMP - Package Conflict: Fink versus OpenDarwin
OpenDarwin project and the Fink project are currently at loggerheads.
The OpenDarwin page seems to indicate that they represent the community effort to port these projects to Mac OS X, but clearly the public (as in outside of Apple) efforts for the past year have largely taken place within the Fink project.
Also, both have graphical installation tools: DarwinPorts-Cocoa versus the FinkCommander However, Fink puts everything in /usr/sw/ whereas OpenDarwin puts everything in /opt/local/ Earlier today the Fink project released a notice to avoid OpenDarwin's packages.

The macosxhints Forums - using Opendarwin
The OpenDarwin Project is currently solving OS X.2 issues, as are the Fink folks, so by the time when OD will have a full gammut of PKG installs available, the new Fink should be up.
So, I was reading up on the fink vs. ports system around the web, so I thought I would give the opendarwin project a thought.
You can read for days and days, memorizing everything, following everything to the letter, yet still, the average educated user will still find it totally impossible to translate the arcane language and esoteric instructions into the actual installation of the least application.

Interview with Jordan Hubbard of Apple and OpenDarwin - OSNews.com
A few days ago we featured an interview with one of Fink's project leaders regarding their package management solution which breeds more Unix software to MacOSX.
Today, we host an interview with Jordan Hubbard regarding the DarwinPorts, speaking for the DarwinPorts Team which a similar effort to bring more Unix software on Mac OS X. Jordan is currently working at Apple and OpenDarwin (while many will know Jordan as the FreeBSD co-founder).
There certainly aren't any plans NOT to try to optimize for Altivec as such opportunities come up.

Porting Mac OS X to Intel
The OpenDarwin crew admits that OpenDarwin, in its current state, "is not a fully-featured operating system that is recommended to be deployed on production machines." In turn, GNU-Darwin for Intel is an alpha build.
The latest version, OpenDarwin 7.2.1, is available for both PowerPC and x86 architectures.
There are also several thousand open-source programs that will run on the Darwins.

 Re: Pay
If OpenDarwin on PPC became a massive success then anybody could manufacture a PPC computer that it could run on.
Apple *could* change the license for future versions of *their* Darwin implementation, but that would just mean OpenDarwin would become a fork.
Linux (I mean the kernel Linux + Gnu tools + KDE etc) has a much larger community behind it than OpenDarwin, so it is much easier to find software that runs on it.

Interview Jordan Hubbard Answers Your Questions
JH: I would say the first thing to do is find a project, like opendarwin or fink or any of the dozen or so Mac OS X-related projects on sourceforge, which seems to be doing stuff you're interested in and start "hanging out" in the forums they provide.
The reason I ask is that I've found the Darwin build system to be insanely difficult, it requires an incredible amount of bootstrapping, uses Debian style.deb packages and is really badly documented.
With the release of Mac OS X millions of less technical users have been introduced in one way or another to open source software.

 Livid's Lividot - OpenDarwin News
The Fink, Gentoo, and DarwinPorts projects are pleased to announce the formation of a cooperative development alliance forged to facilitate delivery of freely available software to Mac OS X. Under this new alliance, the projects will share information and coordinate efforts for porting software to Apple's Mac OS X and Darwin operating systems.
We are pleased to announce that the x86 hardware compatibility list for OpenDarwin is now available at http://www.opendarwin.org/hardware.

 Compiling the MJPEG on MacOS/X
A lot of the items can be found in the Opendarwin ports collection but other than the libglib/gtk you might want to fetch/build most of it from the original sources (or the CVS version).
It is almost certainly a good idea to place all of the built/ported libraries and include files in /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/include because that is the default for almost all autoconf based programs such as mjpegtools.
The library portion builds easily enough but the 'playdv' program is OSS audio specific and either needs to be edited or removed from the Makefile (encodedv also is linux/x86 specific and needs attention).

I did look at FreeBSD 5.3 with HFS+ support but Its early days for the project thus the system panicked everytime I attempt to copy to the NFS share from another host.
You’ll need to create a folder on the root of your disc called tftpboot, this folder is going to store the files to boot your mac.
Using your Mac or the OpenDarwin box copy the following files from your OS X disks to /tftpboot on your openbsd box:

OpenDarwin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The goal of the OpenDarwin project, founded in April 2002, is to create an independent branch of the Darwin operating system that increases collaboration between Apple developers and the open source community.
The OpenDarwin developers use a version control system called CVS to manage changes to the OpenDarwin source code.
Apple benefits from the project because development in OpenDarwin is often incorporated into Darwin releases; and the open source community benefits since it is given complete control over its own operating system.

Microsoft Windows and other operating systems
Any Darwin software will run on OS X, but software written specifically for OS X won't run on Darwin, because the Mac interface (and various other proprietary bits) are not part of Darwin itself.
Although its development was originally managed rather tightly by Apple (understandable, because their business depends on it) they've loosened the leash, making participation in the development fully open.
So OpenDarwin is becoming an open-source OS in its own right.

 PearPC - PowerPC Architecture Emulator
This is mainly a maintaince release fixing some wrong/unimplemented keyboard mappings, a JITC bug preventing Java applications to run and a partition table problem.
But the fix might cause regressions: so if your image is no longer booting and you can compile pearpc yourself, please talk to the pearpc-devel mailing list.
Important note: This release fixes an ugly partition mapping bug which prevented PearPC to boot OpenDarwin.

 LangaList Std Edition 2004-03-01
I wouldn't recommend OpenDarwin as a first choice for a day-to-day working environment (Windows, OS X, or any of the more complete Linux distributions would be better for that), but it is an interesting project, and an impressive display of cross-platform portability.
Although the full OS X only runs on Macs, its core is not owned by Apple: It's based on Open Source software, which has developed in parallel with the Apple (and before that, NeXT) implementations.
There's even a "DarWine" project to let you run Windows applications, unmodified, on Darwin.

 Darwine - News
To achieve it we don't really need the $999 Developer Hardware since we don't use any of the proprietary Libraries of Mac OS X. OpenDarwin/x86 on a regular PC would be just fine.
We do not plan to halt the x86 emulation work.
So if you feel able to work on it, and you have a PC running with OpenDarwin, contact the darwine-devel.

MinGW supplies header files, import libraries, and a compiler tool-chain based on GNU cc and binutils for building native Windows executables and libraries with no dependencies on third party libraries.
To cross-compile the library on my Mac OS X machine, I created DarwinPorts Portfiles for the MinGW tool-chain.
I am using the MinGW tool-chain to compile the Win32 port of OpenDarwin libFoundation.

Together with OpenDarwin it's a great platform (and little-endian :-) to test your code on BSD-based Unix which runs totally different than your local Linux box.
Thanks to all hard working developers from both project for that.
But, over-presence of Linux boxes with x86 processors produced strange problem for me: PowerPC which powers Mac is little-endian while all boxes which I have access to are big-endian.

One of my favorite network utilities for Windows and Linux is Ethereal, an Open Source (Freeware) network packet sniffer used for capturing network traffic for analysis.
You can type 'sudo port deps ethereal' (without quotes) before you start to see what other programs have to be installed.
Since OS X is based on a derivation of Darwin, there had to be a version of Ethereal for OS X. I popped over to the Ethereal website and sure enough, there were links to installing Ethereal for OS X using either Fink or Darwin Ports over at the OpenDarwin project.

OpenDarwin creates its own releases of the Darwin OS.
A notable subproject of OpenDarwin is DarwinPorts, which has the goal of assembling a next-generation collection of ports to Darwin.
The Darwin developers decided to adopt a mascot in 2000, and chose Hexley the platypus over other contenders, such as an Aqua Darwin fish, Clarus the dogcow, and an orca.

I read in the faqs that OS X programs may not run in opendarwin but console applications and x applications will.
I tried my hand at setting up opendarwin, the process was a bit scary, the shivers begin when you have a look at the fdisk program that looks so different from what you find on linux.
Fat use that is. This seems more primitive than the first version of linux (a slackware distro) that I attempted to install so long (8 years) ago.
